| Like its predecessors, the 14th volume in Tompkins Squares brilliant and enduring Imaginational Anthem series showcases excellent, new, obscure, or forgotten guitarists. They were the first to record exceptional County Donegal country-blues player Muireann Bradley. This set was compiled by Irish guitarist Cian Nugent in time for the labels 20th anniversary. Nugent, an Irish session and touring guitarist, first appeared on Imaginational Anthem Vol III and contributed. He annotates the music here with observational and biographical notes and humorous asides. The album opens compellingly with Cork pedal steel guitarist David Murphy. His "The March of the King of Laois" emerges from a 16th century pipers tune; he radically re-interprets it solo. The melancholy and textural space is timeless, with a soothing melody and droning radiance. Brendan Jenkinsons brief "Paris Blues" is an original composition full of ringing harmonics and gentle rhythms. Junior Brother (aka Ronan Kealy) is a singer/songwriter and guitarist from Kerry. Hes well established at home because of the quality of his playing and singing. His reading of the traditional tune "The Lark in the Morning" makes it not a reverie but a joyful reel in an uncommon rendition of an English folk song that is seldom played in Ireland. Female Irish-Okinawan guitarist Caoimhe Hopkinson is an in-demand guitarist and bassist in in almost any genre. She proves a master of fingerstyle technique on the gorgeous "Jamiesons Favourite." Derry-based guitarist Damien ONeil established his career in punk rock with the Undertones and the post-punk band That Petrol Emotion. He contributes the original "Inside Out" that defty draws on Irish traditional music with a contemporary folk persona. Nugent offers the ballad "I Am Asleep and Dont Waken Me" which hed learned from a harp arrangement credited to both Turlough OCarolan and Edward Bunting. Its spectral, sparse, and droning in places as Nugent allows his economic phrasing to render the tunes considerable emotion. Guitarists Jerome McGlynn and Mark McKowski of the Lost Brothers deliver a striking version of "The Blackbird" by pioneering guitarist Arty McGlynn (Jeromes pop). The duo recorded this enduring arrangement. NC Lawlor is an English ex-pat busker who has lived in Dublin for many years. Nugent includes his original, the lonesome Celtic blues tune "Laurie Rose," one of the sets finest inclusions. Guitarist Aonghus McEvoy is another former punk musician who only fairly recently tried his hand at acoustic guitar playing. Compellingly, his "Cry Want" is not a folk song, but a harmonically advanced jazz composition by saxophonist and clarinetist Jimmy Guiffre from his 1961 Fusion album with Steve Swallow and Paul Motian. The composer allowed the hint of folk music into the tune, but McEvoy pulls that out without sacrificing the jazz harmony. Set-closer "Labour of Love" is by Irish Peruvian musician Sean Carpio (normally a jazz drummer, he has in recent years practiced acoustic guitar in secret). He composed it while watching James Grahams play of the same title. Imaginational Anthem XIV: Ireland is yet another indispensible, high quality, revelatory missive from Irelands bountiful guitar tradition. ~ Thom Jurek |
