| 生きる伝説=ウィリー・ネルソン 通算155枚目となる 最新アルバム マール・ハガードの名曲を新たに解釈した『Workin' Man: Willie Sings Merle』 ウィリー・ネルソン、ソロ78作目、通算155作目のスタジオ・アルバム『Workin' Man: Willie Sings Merle』。今作はカントリー・ミュージックの伝説=マール・ハガードが手掛けた名曲をウィリー・ネルソンが新たに解釈した作品。過去10年間でも、ハーラン・ハワード、レイ・プライス、ジョージ・ガーシュウィン、ロドニー・クロウエルといったソングライターに焦点を当てたアルバムをリリースし、さらにフランク・シナトラに関連する楽曲を収録した2巻組アルバムも発表している。ウィリー・ネルソンとマール・ハガードは長年の友人であり、過去にも、1983年『パンチョ・アンド・レフティ』、2007年『ラスト・オブ・ザ・ブリード』(レイ・プライスと共演)、2015年『ジャンゴ・アンド・ジミー』という3作を共作し発表している。 長年の共同制作者ミッキー・ラファエルと共にウィリー自身がプロデュースした本作は、オースティンの本人所有スタジオ「ペデルナレス・スタジオ」で録音。長年にわたりファミリー・バンドのメンバーとして共に活動した、姉ボビー・ネルソンとポール・イングリッシュとの最後の共演作となった。ウィリーの私生活と音楽活動において誰よりも長く寄り添った存在であるボビー(ピアノ)とポール(ドラム)に加え、ミッキー・ラファエル(ハーモニカ)、ケヴィン・スミス(ベース)、ポールの弟ビリー・イングリッシュ(ドラム&パーカッション)が参加。この最新作からの先行シングルは、名曲「Workin' Man Blues」。この曲は1969年にマール・ハガードがカントリーチャート1位を獲得した大ヒット曲。その他にも、長年のキャリアからの様々な時期の楽曲が全11曲収録されている。 |

| Mention a songwriter or musician Willie Nelson likes, give him a couple days in the studio with his band, and chances are Willie will crank out an album in tribute to their work. Nelson has always been amiably laid-back and relentlessly productive, qualities that dont always go together, and given that he made three albums with his old friend Merle Haggard, its no great surprise that Nelson would cut an LP of Hags songs. 2025s Workin Man: Willie Sings Merle has clearly been in the works for a while -- it features Willies sister Bobbie Nelson on piano, who died in 2022, as well as drummer Paul English, who passed in 2020, so its anyones guess why he pulled these tapes off the shelf and finally gave it a release. Of course, Nelson clearly loves these songs, and he sings them with the casual authority and jazzy phrasing that are his trademarks, along with his Django Reinhardt-influenced guitar solos, though he didnt dig especially deep into Haggards catalog. Folks with a passing familiarity with Haggards music will probably know every one of these songs, and with Bobbis graceful piano and the keening harmonica solos from Mickey Raphael, Workin Man takes Hags songs and puts a very Willie spin on them. (Some will get a chuckle from Nelsons deadpan reading of "We dont smoke marijuana in Muskogee" in his cover of "Okie from Muskogee," though he does have fun pronouncing hippies "hip-eyes," and describing White Lightning not as bootleg liquor but as one of George Jones biggest hits.) Willie and his band are effortlessly in the pocket throughout these songs, as he amiably calls out solos from his little sister and offers his opinions at the end of some takes. Like a great many of Nelsons albums, Workin Man really does sound like he knocked it out live in the studio in a couple afternoons, but thats never been a bad thing in his world -- hes nearly always best working in the moment and not overthinking the songs too much, and here he clearly takes subtle joy in remembering his friend and fellow songwriting legend. Its not a grand-scale homage to Merle Haggard, but it comes from the heart and sounds like it was as pleasing to record as it is to hear. ~ Mark Deming |
