| Clarity and contentment rule on Charlie Puths fourth studio album, Whatevers Clever! Issued in late March 2026, the release was preceded by the birth of his first child just a couple weeks prior. Even though both were gestating long before their eventual arrivals, theyre inextricably tied together. That step into parenthood and the giant shift in priority and perspective is apt for the personal tone of the album. Pleasant and warm, its the sound of someone in a good space, opting for hope over heartbreak, introspection over blame, and positive vibes above all. The uplifting "Changes" sets the scene, employing gospel choir and bright piano twinkles as Puth puts life into perspective. Packed with funky horns, thick gooey bass, and some jazz scat, "Beat Yourself Up" continues to inspire and motivate -- both himself and a friend -- as the singer looks back on experiences, his perseverance, and turning that into a universal message. The comforting and reassuring "Cry" serves as that proverbial shoulder, one that he offers to his father, who needs to hear that its OK to cry after the death of Puths paternal grandmother. When Kenny G pops in with a smooth sax solo, its impossible not to feel better. If the iconic saxophonist was any indication, Whatevers Clever! is very 80s and early-90s coded. To really drive that point home, soft rock legends Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins guest on "Love in Exile." Other big-name features include Jeff Goldblum, who offers his own sage advice on "Until It Happens to You"; J-pop icon Hikaru Utada on the Y2K-era R&B heartwarmer "Home"; Ravyn Lenae on the salty "New Jersey"; and Coco Jones on the smooth "Sideways," which also boasts a lush string section. The tender acoustic closer "I Used to Be Cringe" offers some more salient advice and self-reflection, even if the title itself is exactly what hes trying to avoid. On Whatevers Clever!, Puth has learned that the cringiest thing in life is not living your own truth, sacrificing self and your loved ones for the sake of others and fleeting popularity. Personal, endlessly catchy, and a mature step for the new father, this consistent effort might not shake anything up in the zeitgeist, but its one that was made for his own personal and artistic growth. ~ Neil Z.
