| When Dwight Yoakam burst into nationwide recognition with his 1986 debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc., he did something that had not happened in a very long time -- he became a bona fide mainstream country star who was also hip and respected enough to win over savvy critics and rock & roll fans, who appreciated the swagger and smarts in his updated honky tonk music. 1987s Hillbilly Deluxe and 1988s Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room reinforced the success of the debut, and with the dawn of the 1990s, Yoakam was arguably the best and most interesting act who was regularly charting on country radio. This period saw him creating some of his best and most adventurous work, and the 2025 box set And Then I Wrote... The First Three Albums of the 90s offers a convenient overview of one of his richest eras. As the title suggests, And Then I Wrote... presents in full 1990s If There Was a Way, 1993s This Time, and 1995s Gone, conveniently ignoring the uneven 1995 concert set Dwight Live. On these albums, Yoakam had consolidated the strength and imagination that had fueled his music so far, and found himself adding melodic touches and production angles that embraced an even broader range of vintage country and pop influences, while his band, anchored by producer and guitarist Pete Anderson, gave Yoakam as good as he delivered, playing with smarts, concision, and a subtle but insistent swing. These three albums dont boast quite the same sense of discovery as his three LPs of the 1980s, which has as much to do with Yoakam finding his footing as an artist as anything else. That said, in terms of confidence, creative strength, and his skill in committing his musical vision to tape, the music on And Then I Wrote... finds Dwight Yoakam hitting bullseye after bullseye, and This Time in particular is one of the very finest albums he would ever make. Along with some snazzy packaging, And Then I Wrote... also includes a bonus disc of rarities, single sides, and duets with other artists, and if its not as essential as the three proper albums, it outclasses what nearly all of Yoakams peers were doing in the early to mid-90s, and fans whove worn out or misplaced their old copies of these albums will enjoy every moment of this set. ~ Mark Deming |
