商品の紹介
| Sisters Katie and Alison Crutchfield started playing in bands together in high school in their native Birmingham, Alabama, and they eventually found some modest success with their punky indie pop duo P.S. Eliot circa the turn of the 2010s. The siblings then went their separate ways, finding greater success with Allisons 2010s Philadelphia pop-punk band Swearin and Katies ongoing, Billboard 200-charting solo project Waxahatchee. With Katie now based in Kansas and Allison working in A&R for Anti- in Los Angeles, they teamed up to record some new music together for the first time since 2011. The resulting self-titled debut, Snocaps, was recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in Texas, with Brad Cook producing and engineering, and fellow indie musician MJ Lenderman playing multiple instruments on the album along with the Crutchfields and Cook. Good news for fans of their other projects: Snocaps sound very much like a group formed by mid-2020s Allison and Katie, mixing indie pop, punk, rock, and some Waxahatchee country-rock twang, while sounding a little older and wearier than P.S. Eliot on angsty tunes about challenging relationships and having to do things they dont want to do. The 13 (mostly) two- to three-minute tracks are bookended by "Coast" and the brief demo "Coast II"; the former kicks things off with a spare bassline, some canned drums, and humming keys before launching into a messy, overdrive-washed indie rock anthem that repeats the frustrated sentiment, "I could never just coast." Allison takes the lead on "Heathcliff," a bittersweet, tuneful indie pop song dotted with feedback that falls under the "challenging relationship" heading. Katie then moves the show to the back porch for the more reflective "Wasteland," in which complex behaviors include "Cut you up and calm you down." The rest of Snocaps continues in similar fashion, rotating through bops ("Cherry Hard Candy," "Over Our Heads") and ballads ("Hide," "I Dont Want To"), and switching lead singers as well as harmonizing ("Angel Wings"). While some listeners may prefer one singer or type of song over the other, the tracks are all short and strong, sounding less like a side project and more like an album deep into the discography of a beloved indie pop band. And in a way, thats what it is. ~ Marcy Donelson |
