| Following two of his best albums and several worthwhile EPs, Nathan Fake moved to the InFine label for the release of his seventh full-length, Evaporator. As with Blizzards, much of the material on Evaporator was recorded in single takes using analog synths. In this case, Fake constructed the tracks using an old edition of Cubase. The tracks are often warm and luminous yet a bit rugged, and cover a wide range of styles and tempos. "Aiwa" is a smooth sunrise of an opener with skittering breakbeats, while "Hypercube" is a more alert and active trance flashback that elevates and fizzes but refrains from delivering an earth-shaking beat drop. The surging, bass-forward "Bialystok" is an easy, DJ-friendly highlight, while both the swampy "Youll Find a Way" and the steady, nine-minute constant build of "Slow Yamaha" wring drama from midtempo rhythms. "Baltasound" (featuring Fakes old Border Community labelmate Dextro) is a shivering, tundra-like ambient techno piece with a buried trace of a kick drum, and Clark guests on the chilly interlude "Orbiting Meadows." Other short tracks like the sparkling "The Ice House" and the hazy outro "Black Drift" are more abstract counterparts to the beat-driven explorations. Even with a few bangers, Evaporator is far from a club-centric album, however, as the tracks seem to be much more focused on capturing the moments when feelings and sensations emerge. ~ Paul Simpson |
