| With this program devoted to Elsa Barraine, Cristian M?celaru and the Orchestre National de France continue a broader effort of rediscovery, aligned with the ongoing rehabilitation of 20th century French repertoire. Released by Warner Classics, the album brings together Barraines two symphonies as well as two shorter yet evocative works, offering a coherent overview of her rather distinctive musical and orchestral language. Symphony No. 1, written in 1931, immediately reveals an idiom firmly rooted in the classical tradition, while being shaped by rhythmic drive and marked dynamic contrasts. M?celaru adopts a clear, unsentimental approach, avoiding any unnecessary highlighting of effects, which enhances the transparency of the orchestral texture. That said, some of the central passages feel somewhat under-characterized, as though the overall architecture occasionally takes precedence over finer detail. More compact and denser in construction, Symphony No. 2 ("Voina") (1938) establishes a darker atmosphere, particularly in its central funeral march. The conductor achieves a convincing balance between intensity and restraint, even if the climaxes could benefit from a sharper edge, especially in their attacks. Rougher, more abrasive accents, reminiscent of Shostakovich or Prokofiev, emerge without disrupting the underlying clarity of Barraines essentially French orchestral writing. Song-Koi (1945), a suite in eight movements inspired by the Red River, is arguably the most immediately accessible work in the program. The orchestra unfolds a nuanced palette of colors, well captured by a spacious and warm recording that effectively conveys the detail and layering of the orchestral fabric, even if the brevity of certain episodes slightly fragments the overall discourse. Les Tziganes (1959), meanwhile, impresses through its momentum, dynamism, and instrumental virtuosity, but seems more naturally conceived for concert performance, where its narrative scope can fully unfold. Without ever over-interpreting these scores, M?celaru offers a serious and structured reading that helps further establish Barraines presence in the recorded catalogue, even if one might hope, in time, for a more incisive interpretative vision. ~ Islem Meghiref |

| 抑圧の時代を生き抜いた作曲家バレーヌ。燃える精神と気高い音楽がここに蘇る。 エルサ・バレーヌ(1910-1999)は、その生涯において注目すべき、そして政治的にも果敢な人物であり、近年その独自の作曲語法が再び聴き直されつつある作曲家である。パリ音楽院でポール・デュカスに師事し、オリヴィエ・メシアンとは同門であった彼女は、わずか19歳にしてジャンヌ・ダルクを題材としたカンタータで、極めて名誉あるローマ大賞を受賞した。長いキャリアの中でフランス音楽界の要職を歴任し、20年以上にわたり教授職を務めたが、一方で強い左翼的信念を持つ作曲家でもあり、第二次世界大戦下の占領時代にはレジスタンスで重要な役割を果たした。 このアルバムでは、フランス国立管弦楽団の音楽監督クリスティアン・マチェラルの指揮によって、バレーヌの4作品を取り上げている。1931年にイタリアで完成された《交響曲第1番》、1938年に作曲され、フランス語表記では"Voina(ヴォイナ)"でロシア語で《戦争》という不吉な副題をもつ、緊密ながら強靭な《交響曲第2番》、1945年――ベトナムがフランスからの独立を宣言した年――に書かれ、8つの楽章で描いたベトナムを流れる《紅河》、そして1959年にさかのぼる《ツィガーヌ》――恐らくラジオ番組のために書かれたもので、その名の通りジプシー文化に着想を得た作品――である。バルレーヌの音楽は調性に根ざしつつ、確信に満ちた端正な構築と、時代や作曲者自身の思想的・精神的関心を映し出す、明確でありながら繊細に彩られた管弦楽の響きを特徴としている。 第二次世界大戦中のバレーヌのレジスタンス活動は、指揮者ロジェ・デゾルミエール、作曲家ルイ・デュレと共に創設した「音楽家の国民戦線」によるもので、これはフランス共産党と結びついた組織であった。さらに彼女の活動を危険なものにしていたのは、父親がユダヤ人であったという事実である。彼女の作品にはユダヤ的主題を扱ったものがいくつかあり、特に1933年に作曲された交響詩《ポグローム》は、アンドレ・スピールの詩に触発されたものであった。1941年には父マテューがパリ・オペラ座管弦楽団の首席チェリストの職を追われ、2年後に亡くなっている。戦争末期には、レジスタンス活動でたびたび逮捕寸前の危険な場面を経験したバレーヌは、カトリーヌ・ボナールという偽名で生活するという措置を取った。 解放後の時期には、バレーヌは大きな評価を受けた。《交響曲第2番》はロンドンでBBC交響楽団により初演され絶賛を博し、戦後にはコンサートホール、劇場、映画、ラジオ放送などのために数多くの委嘱を受けた。《紅河》もその一つであり、マニュエル・ロザンタルの指揮により、現在のフランス国立管弦楽団の前身である国営放送管弦楽団が初演を行った。 ワーナーミュージック・ジャパン |
