| The worlds of progressive jazz, contemporary classical, science, and film converge on saxophonist Quinsin Nachoffs ambitious, sonically heady 2025 album Patterns from Nature. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, but based in Brooklyn, Nachoff has long straddled the worlds of post-bop jazz and classical. Its a cross-genre quality that has marked both his small group work like 2017s Ethereal Trio with bassist Mark Helias and drummer Dan Weiss, as well as albums like 2023s Stars and Constellations, which found him augmenting his trio with chamber string groups. Here, he takes this broad inspiration further, borrowing concepts from physicist Stephen Morris work and using them as the basis for two multi-movement works. As part of the creative process, he also brought on board filmmakers ina de Groot, Lee Hutzulak, Gita Blak, and Udo Prinsen who then layered in a visual element; debuting the multi-media performance in 2023. The result is an album that finds Nachoff leaning heavily into his classical side, crafting extended pieces named after the natural structures Morris highlights; "Cracks," "Branches," "Ripples," and "Flows." Theres a chaotic dissonance to the work that reflects the natural world, as in "Flow" where bug-like piano dances along reedy strings as a fracas of percussion and bells shimmer at the waters edge. The moments of improvisation also pop-up in surprising, organic ways, as on "Ripples," where Nachoff and trombonist Ryan Keberle seem to scramble through ever meandering harmonic streams.
