商品の紹介
Before he was a Grammy-winning star of 80s heartland radio and early MTV, John Mellencamp was a struggling but talented singer who recorded two nascent albums for MainMan Records, the company launched by infamous music impresario and David Bowie manager Tony DeFries. The 2026 anthology American Dream: The Mainman Recordings 1976-1977, compiles both of these albums, roping in bonus tracks and rarely heard songs. The first, 1976s Chestnut Street Incident, was released under the name Johnny Cougar, a surprise switcheroo that Mellencamp didnt know about until he saw the LP and which led to decades of name changes, from John Cougar to John Cougar Mellencamp to John Mellencamp. Featuring a mix of originals alongside several cover tunes, the album finds a singer still working through his influences and toiling under the weight of DeFries artistic control. The opening "American Dream" and the title track are the most familiar, imbued with the same working-class roots rock swagger that would prove so indelible on 1982s American Fool. We also get a fun cover of David Bowies "The Man Who Sold the World." Others however, especially the songs not written by Mellencamp like the icky, predatory "Supergirl" and the stale retread of Elvis Presleys "Jailhouse Rock," are at best time capsule oddities and at worst threaten to retroactively undermine his hard-earned legacy. Unsurprisingly, the album failed to chart and despite recording a follow-up, Mellencamp was dropped from the label. However, in the wake of the breakthrough success of American Fool, DeFries moved to capitalize on the moment and released that second album as The Kid Inside -- a full five years after it was recorded. While still not as good as Mellencamps best work, The Kid Inside benefits from each song being written by the singer, and cuts like the title track, "Cheap Shot," and "Young Genocides" certainly evoke the barroom troubadour passion of later hits like "Jack & Diane" and "Pink Houses." Still, there are moments of unintentional cringe, including the acoustic ballad "The Whore" whose thinly veiled metaphor for the emptiness of life on the road feels particularly unearned. That said, you do get to hear Mellencamp talk to the engineer in the studio on the track, revealing a bit of his creative process. Theres also the ersatz funk number "I Just Wanna Be Black" which, while perhaps well-intentioned in the moment, seems poorly calibrated. That said, there is certainly a lot to appreciate in these recordings and the best tracks underscore just how in control of his artistic voice Mellencamp was in his twenties; especially with DeFries working against his better interests. While Mellencamp fans and completists may appreciate having these early recordings all wrapped up together, American Dream: The Mainman Recordings 1976-1977 primarily offers a quirky, unfiltered window into a rock icons origin story. ~ Matt Collar
