| While 2026s 13 might be White Denims 13th album in at least as many years, you wouldnt know it by the fresh creative energy on display. The Austin outfit led by singer, guitarist, and songwriter James Petralli has enjoyed a creative renaissance over the past decade, a period marked by their jazzy 2023 collaboration with guitarist Raze Regal and their equally inspired 2024 album 12. Those productions found the one-time garage-punk upstarts further whipping up an organic stew of psychedelic soul, soft-rock, and funk-infused grooves. They once again bring all of that stylistic exploration to bear on 13. From the start theres a heady silliness at play, especially on the opening "God Created (Lock and Key)" in which Petralli (his voice booming through an over-driven mike) announces in deadpan, "On the 13th day, God created White Denim." From there, they launch into a dirty-hippie blues-funk groove over which Petralli snarls out bars like a surrealist hype-rapper. He sings," I take out my tumors and put the lumps in your tea/You’re sucking like a mosquito and I was born ready to bleed." Its an utterly wild way to kick off an album, evoking Frank Zappas 70s acidic prog rock glee, and one thats way more fun than a band almost 20 years into their career is expected to be. Petralli often seems like hes both working through his influences and making them his own at the same time. An in-process vibe that can often lead to songs sounding like several artists colliding at once, as in the giddy "Thats Rap," which again sounds like the White Stripes fused together with early-80s Cameo. Similarly, on "Only a Fool," Petralli impossibly mashes up the amber-hued funk of Isley Brothers with the soft rock/soul of Bobby Caldwell and just a touch of the Strokes post-punk swagger. Of course, its the idiosyncratic blend of influences and the way they come together, not to mention Petrallis resonant, diamond-eyed vocal yawp that makes White Denim sound completely like themselves here. This is true even when they join forces with guests, including Dawes Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith on the hooky "Time Time" and bringing on board singer Adrian De Leon for the hypnotically soulful anthem "Crossfyre." Maybe its divine intervention and maybe its decades of working on their craft, either way on 13 White Denim sounds like a band born again. ~ Matt Collar |
