| Curated by Ricardo Villalobos, When There Is No Sun reflects on Afrofuturist icon Sun Ras influence on electronic music. The release (issued as a single CD or three 12"s, one of which includes bonus mixes) draws from the Sun Ra Arkestra album Living Sky, as well as My Words Are Music, an album of Sun Ras poetry recited by Saul Williams, Last Poet Abiodun Oyewole, TV on the Radios Tunde Adebimpe, and others. Detroit techno collective Underground Resistance appears twice, both times with Williams, adding sparse but insistent beats to lyrics about natural blackness and cosmic waves of sound. Chez Damier and Ben Vedren also contribute two tracks based on Ras poetry, with "The Three Dimensions of Air" featuring lush kora playing along with restrained horns and shuffling drums, and "Endless Realm" having more of a driving, keyboard-splashed house groove. Things get a little stranger with Turkish producer Baris Ks minimal, glitchy interpretation of "Somebody Elses Idea" (with Oyewole). The two Villalobos mixes, both of Tara Middletons reading of "I Have Forgotten," push to the outer limits with tightly bumping beats, strange swerving noises, and scattered vocals. Though both mixes are similar, "Remix 2" (which appears first in the sequence) is steadier and clubbier, while "Remix 1" is more abstract, breaking up the rhythmic flow toward the end of its 12 minutes. A Guy Called Gerald shuns club rhythms entirely with a brief but uplifting rework of the hopeful "Message to Black Youth," recited by Mahogany L. Browne. SHE Spells Dooms mix of the Arkestras recording of "Somebody Elses Idea" is one of the more straightforward jazzy house tracks here, but its simple horn hook and piano sprinkles work well. Calibre turns "Chopin" into a drumnbass roller enhanced by acoustic bass, while a vinyl-only ambient mix of the same track somehow radically transforms the same piece of music into a blissful, floating reverie. When There Is No Sun demonstrates how Sun Ras music and poetry have a powerful impact across genres and generations. ~ Paul Simpson |
