| Ladeiras De Santa Teresa ("The Hills of Saint Theresa") may be the first Brazilian jazz album to be led by two drummers. It is the inaugural multi-track collaboration between Brazilian composer, drummer, trombonist, and guitarist Antonio Neves (son of saxophonist/flutist Eduardo Neves) and drummer/percussionist Thiaguinho Silva, the son of famed percussionist Robertinho Silva. The six-track collection clocks in at just under 25 minutes and offers lush grooves, exquisite textures, and innovative compositions. In 2021, Neves released his Far Out Recordings debut A Pegada Agora E Essa (The Sway Now), a beat-driven exercise that wed modern jazz, carioca funk, vanguard samba, fusion, and MPB. It included guest spots by Ana Frango Eletrico, Leo Gandleman, Hamilton de Holanda, Alice Caymmi, and brother Edu Neves. Carefully composed and produced, it took many chances and netted laudatory reviews across the globe; it established Antonio at the forefront of the international-facing Brazilian scene. He and Silva -- who himself has performed on many Brazilian recordings -- first collaborated in 2023; they recorded "Das Neves" for Mr. Bongos wonderful Hidden Waters: Strange and Sublime Sounds of Rio de Janeiro compilation. That band, with Antonio on brass, and trumpeter brother Edu Neves (Hermeto Paschoal, Ivan Lins, Roberta Sa, and Hiatus Kaiyot, et. al), iconic jazz pianist Luiz Otavio, double bassist and guitarist Guto Wirtti, and percussionist Thiaguinho make up the studio group here, too. "Das Neves" is the set opener and the very recording from the Mr. Bongo compilation. A cornucopia of brass and reeds introduce a knotty yet swinging cadence before piano, bass, and percussion stitch together modern jazz and samba. Lessandro Lesss tenor sax and flute solos register with passionate abandon, driving the band. The melody and rhythms engage post-bop and Afro-Brazilian grooves. Single "Fendas Vocias" offers carioca and jazz-funk with both Neves brothers doubling on brass and drums as Thiaguinho peppers his driving beats with canny, fingerpopping percussion. The horn players wind around an infectious guitar vamp and snaky, pulsing bassline, with Otavios meaty piano holding them all together. The stellar "Viagem De Trem Part" weds piano-driven post-bop, samba, and hip-hop in an MPB/jazz fusion thanks to a guest appearance by in-the-pocket rapper JOCA. A rhythm collision occurs before the players gel into a soulful, blissed-out groove. Closer "Misericordia" is a lithe, breezy Brazilian jazz ballad played midtempo. Its led by strummed nylon-string guitar, bass, and a Neves trombone that solos throughout, framed by airy percussion and sweetly poignant piano and lilting saxophone. Put succinctly, Ladeiras De Santa Teresa is a small wonder. Its focus, sublime musical acumen, and brevity leave the listener wanting much more. ~ Thom Jurek |

| 2023年に〈Mr Bongo〉がリリースしたリオデジャネイロをテーマにしたコンピレーション『Hidden Waters』にも収録された「Das Neves」から本作は幕をあける。エルメート・パスコアルらとも共演する弟のエドゥ・ネヴィスとアントニオのネヴィス兄弟による燃えるようなブラスセクション、ドラ・モレレンバウムの作品にも参加するルイス・オタヴィオのエレガントなピアノ、そしてチアギーニョの脈打つサンバブレイクが見事に融合したこの曲は、まるでエヂソン・マシャードのコンボが現代に蘇ったかのような濃密さを持つ。と同時に現代的な息吹も着実に感じさせる一曲で、この続きを聴いてみたいと思わせるに十分なインパクトだった。そんな期待に違わぬ内容で、伝統と革新のスパークはアルバム全体を通して続く。なかでもネヴェスがドラムをダブルで担当し、アレンジャーとしての独創的で大胆な手腕を発揮する「Fendas Vocais」や、ストリートアーティスト、ミュージシャン、そしてラッパーとしても活躍するジョカが参加したアルバムのハイライトともいえる「Viagem de Trem」あたりは実に見事だ。 アルバムタイトル「Ladeiras De Santa Teresa(サンタテレーザの丘)」は、リオデジャネイロの有名なサンタテレーザ地区に敬意を表して名付けられたのだという。象徴的な街並みを一望できるボヘミアンな居住地として有名なサンタ・テレーザの精神は、このアルバムに見事に体現されている。曲がりくねった路地や石畳の道に息づくジャズとサンバの歴史が、本作には凝縮されているのだ。(2/2) |
