| Jessie Wares aesthetic development from Whats Your Pleasure? to Superbloom is reflected in the covers of the two albums. The former, in clear homage to Andy Warhols photographs of Bianca Jagger, is candid and in high contrast, while Superbloom is staged and florid, more like a Baz Luhrmann vision. Arriving three years after That! Feels Good! -- the glamorous follow-up to Whats Your Pleasure? -- Superbloom indeed sees Ware redecorate the disco to maximalist effect. Lead single "I Could Get Used to This" made for a grand re-entrance, opening with sighs, strings, and flute, with Ware in the role of an all-embracing hostess promising uninhibited delights. Its one of 11 songs produced by Barney Lister, Wares main partner in extravagance here, though second preview "Ride" showed that Karma Kid and the returning Stuart Price were also game, audacious enough to help Ware interpolate Ennio Morricones theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Wares calls to "Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up" and "Jump on the saddle, baby" coincidentally bring to mind the images of Jagger atop a horse at Studio 54. Winking hedonism continues on the other Karma-Price collaboration, "Sauna," a sparkling electro-disco fantasy where the singer turns up the heat and beckons from her chariot, and in the romping "Mr. Valentine." Some of the stuff verges on silly. Although the album lacks the emotional punch of Wares preceding dancefloor-oriented albums, its always entertaining, full of stunning vocal performances. It occasionally tugs at the heart strings, as on the devotional "Love You For," the towering title song, and a strangely positioned old-school pop ballad where Ware laments how quickly children grow up. ~ Andy Kellman |
