| Irish rap trio Kneecap broke through internationally with the release of their conceptual, multi-genre 2024 full-length Fine Art, as well as a BAFTA-winning eponymous biopic that dramatized their rise to fame, starring the rappers as themselves. The group also became well-known for their outspoken pro-Palestine, anti-war views, and have led anti-Israel chants at their festival performances, prompting accusations of terrorism, and leading to some countries banning the trio from entry. Theyve received enough press coverage to the point that theyve become the type of act that far more people have heard about in the news than actually listened to their music (i.e. Pussy Riot). After starting work on a follow-up to Fine Art, they decided that the material was too similar and ended up scrapping it. They instead worked with producer Dan Carey, founder of the Speedy Wunderground label and instrumental force of Londons infamous Windmill Scene, in order to create something "more mature and musical." They named the album Fenian after a word originally used to describe warriors from medieval Ireland, later reclaimed to mean modern-day fighters for Irish republicanism, and which Kneecap use to refer to their fans. The release does away with the cinematic framing and skit-like dialogue of Fine Art, instead offering a much more focused set of songs that directly express the groups views. As with their other releases, however, Kneecap take influence from several genres of music, and the album covers a lot of stylistic ground without straying from their message. Following the atmospheric trip-hop intro "Eire go Deo," "Smugglers & Scholars" is a defiant track with fierce, anti-cop lyrics and a sparse, haunting beat. The unforgiving "Carnival" references the groups terrorism charge following their performance at Coachalla in 2025, ending with an acknowledgement of the charge being thrown out of court. "Palestine" features Arabic-language rapping from Ramallah-based Fawzi, in order to provide a Palestinian perspective on the war. Kneecap place the club bangers in the middle of Fenian, setting their rebellious lyrics to thumping acid techno on "Big Bad Mo" and "An Ra," while dipping into headstrong drumnbass for "Headcase." "Gael Phonics," one of two tracks salvaged from the abandoned full-length, has an infectious bounce to its beat and dazzling wordplay. The John Martyn-interpolating "Cocaine Hill" is a darker, dreamier song about the perils of fame, featuring a spaghetti Western-like guitar riff and a chorus by Lankums Radie Peat, who appeared on Fine Art. "Irish Goodbye," easily Kneecaps most personal and heartfelt song, was written in dedication to member Moglai Baps mother, who died by suicide in 2020 following a lengthy battle with depression. Without getting dramatic, he sincerely expresses how much he misses his mother, while poet Kae Tempest expands on the sentiment with a touching final verse. For all the hype and controversy Kneecap has received, it feels like the group is simply getting back to basics and doing what they do best on Fenian, resulting in their most accomplished effort to date. ~ Paul Simpson |
