| Roland Brivals Creole Gypsy is well deserving of its reputation as a holy grail among record collectors -- particularly among fans of vintage Antillean music. Martiniquais artist Brival issued this inspired work that melds funk, soul, and spiritual jazz with Caribbean rhythms and textures in 1980. Rejected by his record label at the time, he self-released it with the independent FM Productions; it was reissued in 2001 by his label at the time, Ismaa. Enter Miles Clerets Soundway label which painstakingly remastered the set -- with Brivals cooperation -- from the original analog tapes. In addition to being a musician with seven albums to his credit, the artist is also an award-winning novelist, poet, critic, and globally exhibiting painter and sculptor. Brivals musical vision is shaped by his native Martinique and the Caribbean, but also the jazz and funk sounds of Paris and New York, where he spent some youthful years living. The 37-minute album contains six songs, all composed by Brival and rendered in a deliriously exquisite meld of Creole, French, and English languages. The music weds the aforementioned genres with Martiniques bele percussion and carnival traditions. In the title-cut opener, the bands rootsy percussive approach on the tambour bele (a large single-headed, open-bottomed drum crafted from a hollowed-out tree trunk and goatskin) twists around shaken bells, Fender Rhodes piano, electric bassline, trumpet, saxophone, and Brivals guitar. When he commences singing, his voice sounds like a dead cross between Leon Thomas and Jon Lucien, delivering full-throated sensuality and spirituality amid wails and croons. The vibe is lush, airy, and bright, while the rhythms are infectiously danceable. "ABCD" is a rhythm collision between bele drums and a chanting female chorus in call-and-response with Brivals rapid-fire poetry. "Tan Jou Mab" sounds like Gary Bartz & NTU Troop with Andy Bey up front. Brivals French lyrics are delivered in shifting shapes and utterances, consciously melding deliberate syncopated phrasing and a dramatic, singing/speaking style adorned by synth, sax, electric bass, and hand drums. It could have been produced by Larry Mizell. "Tunji"s title is derived from a masculine Yoruba term meaning "reborn" and short for the name "Olatunji." The latter is chanted throughout as the band offers a slinky Afro-Cuban groove ballad while Brivals prayerful, soulful vocal is joined by the chorus, rippling percussion, and Brivals killer mandolin. Its lithe and layered through with history, spirituality, and elegant soul. "Chaj Mile-a" is introduced by Brival singing almost a cappella, framed only by a moaning melodic harmonica and bassline. Percussion and chorus join in a rich, celebratory call and response dynamic and is spiritually-uplifting. Closer "Just for You (Eden)" is unadulterated Caribbean jazz-funk with entwined horns playing a vamp atop bubbling hand drums and rubbery bass. Brival alternately croons and testifies his romantic commitment in a sensual, celebratory love song. Creole Gypsy is a masterpiece; it revels in history, modern soul, and spiritual kinship using languages and rhythms of Antillean folk tradition expressed through jazz and R&B. ~ Thom Jurek |
