| The promise of Konnakol, Zayn Maliks fifth full-length, ultimately proves to be its foil. Named after a style of percussive-syllabic South Indian singing, one might think this LP would be a full embrace of heritage, carrying Malik down a potentially revelatory creative path. Instead, its more a teasing prospect than actualized reality, resulting (mostly) in another collection of languid R&B vocals, sad (but sexy!) lyrics, warm vibes, and hazy atmospheric production provided by a returning James "Malay" Ho (Frank Ocean). Objectively, theres nothing wrong with that, but its territory Malik has been treading since his solo debut on 2016s Mind of Mine. When he does deliver on the titles promise, Konnakol soars, as on "Nusrat" (named after the late qawwali icon), the dark pop gem "Take Turns," and the uplifting "Betting Folk," which blends bright strings and a lilting South Asian vocal sample. Radio-ready pop moments include the sensual "Sideways," the pulsing "5th Element," the Afrobeats-leaning "Met Tonight," and the dramatic, Weeknd-leaning "Die for Me." The highlight track that bridges both of these positive extremes is "Fatal," its addictive slapping beat, elastic bassline, and English/Hindi verses finally justifying the albums title. If all of Konnakol fully committed to this artistic muse, it could have launched this effort to the next level of artistic greatness. Instead, the flashes of South Asian influence are frustratingly lacking (or, when they are present, too subtle to make a lasting impact), losing ground to sounds heard elsewhere time and time again. Maliks reliable vocals and the top production quality deliver the goods, but heres hoping the restrained ideas on Konnakol yield a more liberated approach next time around. ~ Neil Z. Yeung |
