| Winston Hightowers home-crafted tracks rarely stick to one approach, but he taps into strains of sentimentality and the nostalgia of various eras on 100 Acre Wood, his second studio album with the legendary K Records label. The Midwestern spirit of Hightowers Columbus, Ohio background has long been at the core of his lo-fi output, and that essence is definitely present in some of the more bristly, punk-like songs here. Moments like "Blum House" and "Selfish Soother" are reminiscent of the razor-blade melodies and steel-wool production of Times New Viking, and the concise arrangements that happen within run times under two minutes are straight from the playbook long followed by Guided by Voices or Cloud Nothings. Theres also some of the chaos and randomness of the earliest Modest Mouse recordings on some songs. "Poppi" is built around a frantic drum loop, with Hightowers scattershot vocal phrasing and jagged guitar lines fighting for space as the song speeds by in under two minutes. The fast and frenetic tracks on 100 Acre Wood are fun and full of energy, but the more slow-moving inclusions are where the album starts to feel more like an intentional statement and not just a collection of jumpy melodic punk tunes. The spare "High School" is made up of jazzy guitar chords and layered vocals, and it moves softly through lyrical scenes of memory and melancholy with the same soft sadness as a Zombies ballad. Theres also the faintest hint of chamber pop influence amid the lo-fi textures, with songs like "Lay Low" or "Moonside" sounding like home-recorded refractions of the kind of big-picture orchestral pop made by the Free Design or a post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys. 100 Acre Wood is another flood of ideas from Winston Hightower, this time including gently crafted sounds that open up the emotional spectrum of both the album and his music on the whole. ~ Fred Thomas |
