商品の紹介
| Out on his own after making music with bands like Veronica Falls and Ultimate Painting, James Hoare has gone further down the rabbit hole in pursuit of the most understated, most intimate version of melancholy guitar pop possible. Under the name Penny Arcade, Hoare plays his tender tunes softly in front of a tape machine, though really it sounds like hes on the bed right next to you the whole time. His first record under this banner was 2024s Backwater Collage and it was lovely in its preciseness and calm, mixing catchy melodies and production that never reached the red on the dials. Taking that sparse template and breaking it down even more, 2026s Double Exposure is just as true and blue, even more so at times. Recorded with the help of a vintage Elka Drummer One drum machine and downplaying guitars -- a little -- in favor of keyboards while leaving the songs resolutely unpolished, the record has the feel of a demo made for a friend, or two. It certainly doesn’t have a polished sheen and makes Backwater Collage sound like it was made at Abbey Road in comparison. That being said, Hoare knows exactly what hes doing as the unfinished nature of the music gives added poignancy to the autumnal melodies. It also serves to draw the listener in with its warmth and unassuming nature; songs like "Time" and "Worst Trip" have an almost conversational feel to them, while "Everythings Easy" glides along like a hazy memory, and "We Used to Be Good Friends" bubbles calmly like a ghostly Xerox of an old Spacemen 3 song. When the guitars do leap to the fore, like on the latter song where the searing solo brings it home or "Memory Lane" where the jangle and hum intertwine in fine psychedelic fashion, they sound just right. Despite the calm and restrained nature of Double Exposure, it makes an impression that is sneakily strong. The first time through, one might be struck by how peaceful and even somewhat mellow it appears, but subsequent spins unlock layers of melancholy that even Hoare hasnt been able to reach before. Thats an achievement, considering his past work, and the album makes a compelling case for being ranked right near the top of his output. ~ Tim Sendra |
