| Younge was billed as Adrian Younges magnum opus, a somewhat mystifying designation for a brief, relatively narrow-scoped set that a casual listener could misidentify as any number of the 50 or so albums the do-it-all released before it. Modest when compared to highly conceptual undertakings like the Something About April trilogy, The Midnight Hour, and The American Negro, the album consists of nine concise orchestral instrumentals that play out in less than half an hour. As ever, Younge displays his love for the likes of Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin, David Axelrod, and Galt MacDermot, and the boom-bap specialists who have sampled their works, and does so in a way that isnt beholden to any one inspiration. In addition to typically sumptuous strings arranged and conducted by Younge, the set showcases the cracking drums of Mekala Session and a very active section of brass and reeds that features multiple baritone saxes lending a physicality to the low end. Soloing is minimal, as virtually every component is part of the ceaselessly churning action. The album was released a week after the splashdown of NASAs Artemis II mission, and though Younge could have been forgiven for directly referencing something like Quincy Jones "Walking in Space" or Johnny Harris "Footprints on the Moon," "Moon Traveling" here is unmistakably his own composition with the drums, strings, and fast-jabbing brass and reeds all darting around one another. Another standout is "Clockwise," from which an unforgettable melody arises around the 90-second mark. ~ Andy Kellman |
