| After recording a series of sonically striking indie rock and chamber folk albums with the likes of John Parish (PJ Harvey), Tony Berg (Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney), and Blake Mills (Feist, Perfume Genius), Jesca Hoop decided to produce her seventh album, Long Wave Home, by herself for the first time. She nonetheless brought in some top-notch collaborators. Residing in Manchester, England, since the late 2000s, the California native recorded it in London, Bristol, and the Isle of Wight with engineers Tim Thomas (Bright Eyes, British Sea Power) and Leo Abrahams (Belle and Sebastian, Frightened Rabbit) and musicians including fellow experimental folkie Sam Amidon, bassist Jon Thorne (Lamb), and drummer Seb Rochford (Sons of Kemet). Jesse D. Vernon (This Is the Kit) contributed arranging. Based on a wave of personal and political upheaval circa 2025, Long Wave Home begins with the personal on "Adam," a spacious yet orchestrated offer of loyalty and affection that ends with the warning, "Dont try my patience." Also personal in nature, "Love Is Salvation" is a little more earnest, with horns accenting warm appreciations of her partners literal home-building skills. Elsewhere, the brisker, guitar-based "Big Storm" takes on a surfy, noir-ish demeanor for her threats to leave. Hoop also gets prickly on political entries like the more angular and staccato "Designer Citizen," a song that mocks the idea of labeling and excluding people, as she watches events unfold in her home country from abroad. It repeatedly asks, "What we doin?" Later, "Playground" incorporates elements of Arabic music into a song that bears witness to the destruction of Gaza, and "Signal to Noise" calls out the medias role in drowning out political resistance. She seems to bring the personal and political together on closing track "Long Wave Home," a song more generally about isolation and solidarity. Mostly playful in tone despite its timely, often serious topics, Long Wave Home makes for another strong entry in Hoops catalog. ~ Marcy Donelson |
