| As anyone whos experienced loss knows, grief is a lifelong companion -- and one that often makes its presence more keenly felt during joyful times. When Bleachers released Everyone for Ten Minutes, Jack Antonoffs life was at a personal and professional peak. Along with his happy marriage to actor Margaret Qualley, he became only the fourth person to win the Grammy Award for Album, Record, and Song of the Year as well as Best New Artist. His evolving relationship with his sisters death, however, is just as vital to the albums honoring of the past and embrace of the future. As he surrounds listeners in these complex feelings, Antonoffs use of sound is typically eloquent. Each choice is an emotional footnote: On "The Van," the soulful brass and strings of Blue Magics "I Just Dont Want to Be Lonely" wrap Antonoffs memories of his first bands in instant nostalgia. On "Upstairs at Els," the clipped new wave beat and title nod to Yaz, one of his formative favorites. Bleachers also branches out on Everyone for Ten Minutes, adding earthy textures that underline the influence of classic songwriters on these songs. Pedal steel, banjo, and fiddle join in on "Shes from Before," a touching homage to both Antonoffs family tree and his love of Bob Dylan. With its lilting rhythm and unvarnished honesty ("These hope-filled lies/These honored traditions/If you repeat them enough/You can live with somebody whos missing"), "I Cant Believe Youre Gone" is equally indebted to Leonard Cohen and Shane MacGowan. This feeling of connection extends to Bleachers playing, which bottles the full-band energy of their unbridled live shows. Though Antonoff recorded one of the albums rowdiest numbers, "Dirty Wedding Dress," on his own, the bands intuitive playing lends weight to the grand gestures of "Take You Out Tonight" and "Sideways." Theres also more ebb and flow on Everyone for Ten Minutes than on some of their previous albums. Calling songs as engaging as "We Should Talk," a highly emotional reincarnation of 80s pop thats quintessential Bleachers, or the acoustic lament "Dancing" breathers doesnt quite do them justice, but they do make the peaks the band hit on "You and Forever" and "Im Not Joking"s celebrations of love extra satisfying. The ever-present -- and ever-changing -- blend of grief and joy within Bleachers music is always heartfelt, but its rarely sounded as rousingly real as it does on Everyone for Ten Minutes. ~ Heather Phares |
