| Having M83 compose the score to a film about the importance of dreams to humanity is almost too on the nose. After all, Anthony Gonzalez has made a career out of expressing the magical within his music. Though his score for Bi Gans award-winning sci-fi epic Resurrection fulfills expectations of awestruck soundscapes, how he accomplishes it isnt always predictable. As Gans tale of how the world traded the ability to dream for immortality spans the five senses and different eras in Chinese history, Gonzalez unites its storytelling with his signature sweeping electronics -- and unites his style with inventive orchestral instrumentation. On "Spinning Fury," horizon-wide synths provide the backdrop for restless strings that hint at the sense of wonder that "Transfiguration Overture" delivers in full with flute, choral vocals, acoustic guitar, and surprising key changes. Despite its elaborate moments, Resurrection is notably restrained compared to Fantasy or A Necessary Escape: Dakar Chronicles, reaffirming that Gonzalez has more range than hes often given credit for. The elegance and mystery of "Clamor of Time" is as vivid as anything off of A Necessary Escape, but it evokes dreams and memories floating into thin air rather than dust and adrenaline. Many of the scores longer pieces prioritize sustaining a mood over maximalism; while the subtle shadings of "Spectres" and "Serpentine" dont demand attention, they do reward it. Similarly, some of the finest cues cherish tradition as much as imagination. "From Bright Lights" gracefully entwines Chinese and Western musical traditions through swelling strings that open into a sea of electronics and muted piano. "Fantasmers," part of the score to Resurrections silent movie-within-a-movie, is a lush homage to classical music that marks one of Gonzalezs biggest steps outside his comfort zone. Once again, his soundtrack work is as essential to his body of work as M83s own albums.
