| Peruvian DJ and producer Sofia Kourtesis broke through with her acclaimed 2023 debut album, Madres, and has continued to grace the stages of prestigious festivals and clubs across the globe. Her installment of the DJ-Kicks series, like many other volumes, isnt necessarily a straightforward dance mix, though there are long passages of ecstatic, beat-matched grooves. This one is especially introspective, due to the fact that Kourtesis mother passed away while she was putting the mix together. It establishes a reflective mood with a chime-heavy Jon Hopkins piece, then proceeds to express a multitude of indescribable emotions with the inclusion of Aphex Twins sparse yet acutely detailed "Flim." Kourtesis own "Its You," a dreamy midtempo track with stuttering beats and a yearning vocal sample, eases its way into the mix, then flows into Daphnis remix of obscure Afrobeat act Cos-Ber-Zam. Laurence Guys filter house gem "Make Me Feel Better" fills the floor but also feels cleansing and therapeutic. Much of the remainder of the mix concentrates on blissful, ecstatic grooves, including a few more of Kourtesis productions, with the mysterious, reflective "Texas Changing" being one of the highlights. Other selections range from splashy, percussive house (Axel Boman) to bubbling electro-techno (Avalon Emerson) to acid electro (Sedef Adasi). The mixs energy level steadily ascends with raptor house from Nick Leon and Dj Babatr, U.K. funky from Ahadadream, and vintage-sounding diva house from Chloe Caillet, Luke Alessi, and Jocelyn Brown. Kourtesis collaborates with Peruvian collective Novalima on the gorgeous, shimmering "Los Poemas No Siempre Riman," which leads into Dave DKs "Lagoon 69," a breaky progressive house tune that hits hard. Finally, the mix sends the listener off into pleasant dreams with one of those Four Tet tracks bearing unpronounceable, unsearchable glyphs as a title. Kourtesis DJ-Kicks splendidly celebrates global club culture as well as her own Peruvian heritage, with the added emotional weight of reflecting on familial loss. ~ Paul Simpson |
