商品の紹介
Having spotlighted the likes of Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, the Beatles, and Bacharach and David, Ace Records continues their Black America Sings series with a volume dedicated to the compositions (and co-compositions) of Stevie Wonder. This combines cover versions with tunes Stevie granted to other artists, and they fall within a two-decade timeframe -- 1966 through 1986, to be specific -- with an emphasis on the first ten years. It leads with Jermaine Jacksons storming "Lets Get Serious," a 1980 Top Ten pop hit that helped Stevie rebound from the largely misunderstood Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants. That the song rivaled anything on Hotter Than July, issued later that year, reaffirmed that Stevie didnt keep all of his best material to himself. "Lets Get Serious" is immediately trailed by a slinking earlier instance of this, Rufus & Chaka Khans "Tell Me Something Good," a number three pop hit that won the 1975 Grammy for Best R&B Performance (and lost Best R&B Song to Stevies own "Living for the City"). Neither of the two songs he wrote for Minnie Ripertons Perfect Angel made the cut, and its equally unfortunate that the set lacks the Spinners "Its a Shame," one of several songs Stevie wrote with partners Syreeta Wright and Lee Garrett. Additional co-writers in the mix include Sylvia Moy and Henry Cosby, represented with the Bar-Kays gritty take on "I Was Made to Love Her," Nancy Wilsons flashy version of "Uptight (Everythings Alright)," and more, as well as Clarence Paul and Morris Broadnax, who teamed with Stevie for "Until You Come Back to Me (Thats What Im Gonna Do)." Stevie originally cut the latter song in 1967, and it gathered dust until Aretha Franklin took hold of it in 1973. Among the fascinating deeper selections, the Dixie Hummingbirds nearly barreling version of "Jesus Children of America" is a standout, as is Lou Rawls "Evil," a grand Michael Lloyd production with an odd push and pull between resignation and wrath. Remarkably, there is minimal overlap here -- only a couple selections -- with DJ Spinna and Bobbitos The Wonder of Stevie compilations, a three-volume series (2003-2016) that cast a wider net in terms of chronology, geography, and genre. ~ Andy Kellman
