| After a lifetime spent making music -- beginning as a teenager in the influential late-70s punk band Dolly Mixture -- Picture in Mind is Rachel Bors first solo album. Using the name Rachel Love and working with her husband (Steve Lovell) and sons (Syd Bor and David Lovell) on a series of home recordings, she crafts a sound in the same ballpark as groups like Broadcast and Stereolab, very mid-century futuristic with warm melodies and a lovely balance of electronic sounds and acoustic instruments, especially the cello that Bor learned as a child. Bors vocals are the sweet cherry on top of the delightful sonic concoction, putting across the lyrics in very intimate and sincere fashion. The songs are mostly gentle and midtempo, allowing for maximum absorption of the tender hooks and slow bubbles of emotion. There is definitely a melancholy cast to the record, as a feeling of cloudy skies and moonlit walks pervades, but its so heartfelt and unadorned with nonsense that its easy to get swept along with the tide. Songs like "Down the Line" -- which is a cover of a Dolly Mixture song -- and "Far Away" have a stately majesty to them, almost like lost Margo Guryan tracks; a few have a sophisticated light touch that recalls Saint Etienne at their most precise ("Easter Song," "Primrose Hill"); and the lovely instrumental "Wandlebury" that closes the album shows that Bor could have a career in film music if she so desired. Its a nice showcase for her skills as a cellist and also an arranger. The whole album is divine indie pop, played and sung with wonderfully understated passion. Everything is at once shiny and vintage; the record is full of songs that would have given albums by any of the groups previously mentioned a touch of class. Rachel Bor is ready for her close-up, and Picture in Mind is a stunning reintroduction to her music. ~ Tim Sendra |
