| In the early 2020s, after a lifetime of making music that began as a teenager in late-70s punk-pop band Dolly Mixture, guitarist/cellist/vocalist Rachel Bor made her first solo album under the name Rachel Love. Picture in Mind is a wonderfully crafted, perfectly retro-future pop album made with the assistance of her husband, Steve Lovell. Sadly, he passed away shortly after the record was finished. Bor wanted to keep making music, and with the help of her sons David and Syd, she learned how to use Logic, and with them, recorded a second album, Lyra. It covers similar musical territory as Picture, a warm and inviting mix of electronics and acoustic instruments, especially cello, with Bors sincere and sweet vocals on top. The overall mood is much sadder, as one might expect. The first track, "Without You," delves into the pain of loss and loneliness straight off, pairing the gentle sawing of cellos with Bors buried-in-reverb vocals as the song softly punches the listener in the gut. The rest of the record covers similar ground with Bor never shying away from the real emotions such a loss uncovers. Lyrics like "I reached out to touch you but you werent there" are devastating, especially when sung in such hushed, downcast tones. Even when the songs are a little peppy -- like "Why" or "What Was It For" -- the mist of misery never lifts. All that being said, one might expect Lyra to be a slog, or at the very least an unpleasant listening experience. Those suppositions are quite untrue; the album is beautiful and comforting. Even though one can clearly divine that Bor was absolutely crushed by Lovells death, its moving that she kept on making the music, kept working on the project they started, and did it in such a lovely, touching way. The record is a testament to the idea of love going on even when the lover is gone, and along with the tears, there is hope blossoming in the beauty of the songs and melodies. As with Picture in Mind, Lyra is first-class indie pop music, made with great care and grace, and essential listening for fans of the genre, heartbroken or not. ~ Tim Sendra |
