| A linchpin of the storied Elephant 6 collective, the Olivia Tremor Control created two albums and several EPs and singles of surrealist avant-garde pop which went beyond the tropes of psychedelia, incorporating ramshackle instrumental arrangements and highly complex tape edits and electronic effects, merging musique concrete with rock in a way that hadnt been heard since the debut of the Mothers of Invention or the United States of America. The group also explored purely experimental music with Explanation II: Instrumental Themes and Dream Sequences, a companion to their first album meant to be played simultaneously in order to produce a quadrophonic sound experience, and a side project called Black Swan Network. The releases by Black Swan Network were based on recordings sent by listeners describing their dreams. OTC and Black Swan Network released a collaborative, tour-only effort, and Black Swan Network issued The Late Music Volume One, a set of haunting ambient passages and manipulated-beyond-recognition dream descriptions. Both groups seemed to disappear by the early 2000s, though Black Swan Network did issue a 7" EP as part of Happy Happy Birthday to Mes singles club, while members of OTC formed Circulatory System and the Sunshine Fix. OTC did continue to slowly work on material for a third album, however, and two songs which had been in the works for decades finally surfaced on November 29, 2024, the day co-founder Will Cullen Hart died of a heart attack. He had also been compiling rare and previously unreleased material for a Black Swan Network release, which was posthumously finished by his collaborators and released as The Early Music, Vol. 1 in 2026. The first half of The Early Music consists of the 2000 HHBTM singles club EP, which was limited to 500 hand-numbered copies with felt silk-screen cover art, and undoubtedly has only been heard by the most diehard E6 fans. While there are some spaced-out tape effects and swirling arrangements, the EP largely sounds like a more lo-fi version of OTC rather than the ambient soundscapes of The Late Music. The rest of the tracks are previously unreleased material drawn from Harts vast home archives, dating somewhere in between the hiatus of OTC and the beginning of Circulatory System. Nearly all of the selections are brief and fragmentary, establishing a set of strange moods and ideas before moving on. The dark, murky melodies of songs like "Horses and Camels" easily point to the direction that Circulatory System would take, although these tracks have much more of a homespun, demo-like feel compared to the groups elaborately constructed full-length statements. "Big Surprise" starts out sounding like a 70s-era Beach Boys outtake, but its harmony vocals are quickly cut off by a bizarre raga which somehow mutates into industrial clanging. The Early Music surprisingly comes closer to sounding like a lost or unfinished OTC or Circulatory System release than a revisit of the premise of Black Swan Network, and for longtime fans, its a fascinating glimpse into what could have been. ~ Paul Simpson |
