| The fourth compilation of commercial Japanese music selected by Tokyo native DJ Notoya for Frances Wewantsounds label, Tokyo Pulse spans the same years as 2025s Tokyo Bliss but pulls from the Nippon Columbia catalog rather than that of King Records. Its almost as satisfying in its similarly wide range of sounds advertised in the full title. Two-thirds of Notoyas descriptively annotated selections here date from 1978 through 1981, leading off with "Yoru e Isogu Hito," slick jazz-funk distinguished by the sonorous voice of Naomi Chiaki and hints of Azymuth and the Blackbyrds. Just behind Chiaki is Yumi Murata, whose "Ranhansha," an effervescent dancer in the vein of Rufus & Chaka Khan, contrasts with her art-pop ballad appearance on Wewantsounds Tokyo Dreaming (put together by British DJ Nick Luscombe). The curiously named Great American Music Band, or GAM for short, is the oddest pick here, linking Jamaica to Norway with a reggae-fied adaptation of Edvard Griegs "Solveigs Song." The chronological outliers include Bread & Butters undoubtedly War-inspired "Memory" (1974) and Nami Shimadas pristine "Mitsumeteirunoni" (1988), midtempo dance-pop with resounding echoes of Jam & Lewis and Stock Aitken Waterman productions. Its a testament to Notoyas thoroughness and discernment that he excavated an oddly haunting gem from the bottom of L-E-V-E-Ls Eve, whats otherwise a nondescript work of new wave pastiche. ~ Andy Kellman |
