| Scottish slowcore band Tacoma Radar most certainly had Low, Galaxie 500, Codeine, and Bedhead records on repeat in their practice spaces, bedrooms, and heads, because their 2004 album No One Waved Goodbye sounds like a mash-up of all those bands with a little American Analog Set thrown in for good measure. They have all the hallmarks of the sound down pat, from the guitars that jangling back and forth between two chords, the drums that stutter and brush, then burst into crashes of cymbals and snare as the songs build, the thrumming lead guitar that threatens to jettison away from the chords and burst into flight, and the song structures that lend themselves to introspective melancholy dashed with the occasional cloudburst of emotion. It could have been a case of pale reproduction but somehow the band escape the realm of pastiche and end up sounding almost essential. There are a few reasons they can do this, from simple to much more difficult. First off, they had a vocalist, Jennifer Cosgrove, who didn’t possess a huge voice -- in fact, much of the time she barely rose above the music behind her -- but she was able to transmit all the tender damage and fragile yearning of the songs. bringing them to lift with a graceful lilt. Secondly, their scholarship ended when it came time to plug in their instruments. Once they did, they let emotion take over. They werent teaching a class on slowcore; they were using its template to say something important about being sad and nearly defeated in the mid-2000s. To that end they also tweaked the template a bit to add more noise to the mix. Instead of letting the spaces between the notes carry some of the weight, Tacoma Radar fills the cracks with clanging guitars, gnarly fuzz, wandering bass lines, and reverb. Its a comforting blanket of sound that is indebted somewhat to shoegaze, especially on songs like "Whos Gonna Hold the Line" where the tempo is ratcheted up just a bit. These blips of energy aside, No One Waved Goodbye is a lost gem of slowcore revivalism that does exactly what a good reboot should; taking all the best things that have come before and injecting them with thrillingly new, completely melancholy life. ~ Tim Sendra |
