| Before Super Furry Animals began recording for Creation Records and released their excellent 1996 debut album Fuzzy Logic, they had spent a few years playing together, figuring out how to fit the pieces of the sound together. They released two very good EPs in the process, both in 1995. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyndrobwllantysiliogogogochynygofod (In Space) and Moog Droog showed the band already in control of their left-field psychedelic rock and cranking out memorable songs just as easily as they tied their shoes. They are included on the 2026 collection Precreation Percolation in all their glory, allowing fans who may have missed out the first time around a chance to own these early days gems. Many of the songs did turn up on the Out Spaced collection, but its nice to have them in their compete form here -- it’s even more exciting that theyre combined with a treasure trove of rarities, many of which had never been heard before. The tracks are a mix of songs recorded at the time, some of them with actor Rhys Ifans on vocals, and some with newly done instrumentation and vocals added. Much of the music is very much like the technicolor bursts of indie rock one would expect, and love; a few tracks show off the bands more exploratory electronic side. "Dim Brys, Dim Chwys" is one of them and its a bubbling, sunny delight. Others, like "Trk05a," are proggy and exploratory, like Welsh takes on the sound of Germany from the 70s. Some of the cassette demos on the set also have a more electronic bent to them; the version of "The Man Dont Give a Fuck" is a wiry, buzzing, more malevolent take with the synths out in front of the mix. The tracks with Ifans on lead -- like the rollicking "Choking on Your Lust" and the trippy "Pocket Sam" -- are a lot of fun; the cassette demos are cheerfully lo-fi and ramshackle; and overall, its fascinating to take a peek back in time to check out the bands early working days. Did they need to start off the demos with more overdubs? Maybe not, but if the band wanted to revisit these great songs and finish them the way they wish they could have, who can complain about that? Precreation Percolation is a welcome reminder that Super Furry Animals were one of the most interesting, consistently surprising, and always worth hearing bands of their era. ~ Tim Sendra |
