商品の紹介
| Despite sustaining his commercial roll with a third straight Top Ten album and additional smash hits with "3D" (headlined by Jung Kook) and "Lovin on Me," Jack Harlow opted to go in another direction with his fourth LP Monica. In early 2025, around the time he issued a batch of true-to-form singles that included the Doja Cat collaboration "Just Us," Harlow moved from his native Kentucky to New York. A change in scenery, combined with a waning passion for writing vainglorious rhymes, fostered this set of gentlemanly ballads inspired by neo-soul, the marketing term-turned-classification for late-90s/early-2000s recordings by the likes of DAngelo, Erykah Badu, and Bilal. Harlow, joined by several of his longtime associates and PinkPantheress collaborator Aksel Arvid, booked time at Electric Lady Studios, the famed Greenwich Village facility where many of the styles landmark recordings were made. The likes of bassist Jermaine Paul, keyboardists Robert Glasper and Cory Henry, guitarist Franklin Rankin, and singers Ravyn Lenae and Omar Apollo -- all of whom are in that lineage -- were brought in for additional authenticity. Harlow comes across as tentative throughout. Whether compared to his past or his influences here, his lyrics and performances are lacking in original thought (sometimes clear thought) and charisma. The power and range of his singing voice are limited to the point where the musicians often sound constricted, and the mix is just as sympathetic, rendering Stephane Clements trumpet -- presumably the answer to "We need a Roy Hargrove type" -- close to inaudible. At their best, due mostly to the expert players, these desiccated, low-wattage slow jams make for pleasant background listening. ~ Andy Kellman |
