| DJ Seinfeld began working on his second album for Ninja Tune right as Mirrors was coming out in 2021, and the album slowly took shape and evolved as his busy touring schedule took him around the world. If This Is It reflects on themes such as letting go, embracing the present, and accepting things as they are. The songs feature many of the hallmarks of Seinfelds sound, from effervescent chords to teary-eyed vocal snippets -- opener "U Cant Come Home" even incorporates a voice mail message, though its not as dramatic as the one from the previous albums "These Things Will Come to Be." Seinfelds music has incorporated more guest vocals than samples over the years, so If This Is It feels a bit more collaborative than his past releases, yet its still highly personal. The albums most immediate club heater is "The Right," a reunion with Confidence Man filled with disco strings, vinyl spinbacks, and sweetly catchy vocals. Even if its not quite as euphoric and triumphant as 2023s "Now U Do," the previous Seinfeld/Confidence Man single, its still a highlight. "Turning the Page" is an urgent, aching fusion of trance and garage. "Of Joy" clears room for ARYs bittersweet vocals, resulting in one of the albums most affecting performances. The heart-tugging "Everything U" seems like a flashback to Seinfelds overwhelmingly emotional debut album Time Spent Away from U, particularly due to looped lines like "Why dont you just tell me the truth?" "Something That Ive Never Known" (with guest singer SG Lewis) has a hazy, Italo-disco-inspired rhythm, trying something new by going in a more overtly retro direction. "Our Mothers Walk" balances a brisk, racing beat and a heavy, cruising bassline with delicate acoustic guitars and distant vocals. If This Is It feels like a natural expansion of DJ Seinfelds sound, and it feels like the artist has grown more mature while remaining unafraid to express his feelings. ~ Paul Simpson |
