商品の紹介
| Tara Clerkin Trios second album, Somewhere Good, came along a few decades after trip hop, but it is one of the few records to live up to the initial promise of the genre. Arty, dubby, melodic, head-nodding, and bathed in more atmosphere than a David Lynch movie set, the record is a perfect mixture of sound and tunes thats meditative and invigorating in equal doses. The trio use many of the elements of trip hop, from moody synth washes to slower-than-a-glacier breakbeats and plaintive vocals, but add loads of interesting sounds, tricks, and structures along the way to a glorious result. Glitchy electronics, folky acoustic guitars, straight-ahead jazz pianos, drumnbass basslines, and skittery live drums all make appearances -- sometimes on the same song -- and the production is sparse, but prone to art-damaged moments of sonic overload. "Ups & Downs" starts off as a simple warped bit of piano, bass, and drums late-night dub jazz but builds to a crescendo of string samples, operatic vocal loops, and an almost evil feel. Other tracks take similar journeys; this isnt an easy listening record by any means. There is an unsettling nature to most of the record that weighs heavily on songs like the staggering title track or "Slow Island," both of which have a dark menace right below the surface. The deep dread of those moments is offset by the occasional bit of sunshine that breaks through the clouds. They proved on a previous release that they were able to write a pretty pop song with "Marble Walls" and they do it again here with "Lazy Daisy," a dubbed ballad that sees Tara Clerkin crooning sweetly, the bass bubbling like bathwater, and the guitar strumming like a gentle caress. Its a nice oasis in the middle of turmoil that gives a sense of the bands range. They seem capable of almost anything by the time the album is over, the sonic journey one takes along the way is quite impressive. Not too many groups took this kind of dark trip during the trip hop era, maybe none of them, and that was why the genre soon faded out. Tara Clerkin Trio bring it back here with a vengeance and give it the kind of imaginative, dark, moody, and meaningful reboot it desperately needed. ~ Tim Sendra |
