| The Karman Line - Black marks the debut long-player by Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble. The band, founded by Neil Innes and Chip Wickham, includes members of Work Money Death and the Lewis Express (who all record for Inness ATA Records). The lineup includes Innes on bass and production, Wickham and Richard Ormrod on reeds and woodwinds, arrangements and brass by Steve Parry, John Ellis on piano and keyboards, and drummers/percussionists Sam Hobbs, Joost Hendrickx, and Sam Bell. Session harpist Alice Roberts and bass clarinetist Conrad Clenton guest. The groups sound is heavily influenced by jazz pioneers including Alice Coltrane, Yusef Lateef, David Axelrod, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The set opens with "Karman Cantata," composed by Innes, Wickham, and Ellis. There is a subtle Latin rhythmic groove in the modal opening led by hand percussion and piano, with Roberts sweeping in with elevated and atmospheric harmonic invention. Wickham delivers the vamp-like melody on flute with subtle ensemble backing from Parry and Ormrod. As the band gently swell, Ellis delivers a knotty piano solo binding the elements together in nearly regal cadence. "Alto Vento" commences with a syncopated vamp that resembles the John Coltrane Quartets on "My Favorite Things." The flute and horns swirl around the rhythm sections canny Latin groove. It twists and shifts textures around Wickhams loping solo. "Low Orbit" employs a slightly funky soul jazz theme that is at once spectral and tough as articulated by horns, with flute up front amid electric keys and breaking drums. Vibes add a mysterious vibe from the margins, but the jam becomes gradually more forceful and sensual. "All Is" joins bassoon, bass clarinet, tuba, and French Horn under Ellis exploratory piano solo. The latter emerges and engulfs the tune with emotion and color. Flute adds ballast during the final third. On "Celestial Matari," the interplay between marimba, bassoon, hand percussion, and flute winds around the rhythm sections exotic bump that references the old Champs nugget "Tequila." Wickhams solo adds an ethereal element, even as the groove gets dirtier as reeds and brass build out the modal sensibility. "Earthly Elements" is the sets most voluptuous track. An uncredited, syncopated, strummed nylon-string guitar goes head-to-head with congas and bongos as Hobbs lays in breaks. Wickhams pulsing flute guides the track; he sounds like Jeremy Steig at his funkiest when engaging the guitar and Inness elastic, propulsive bassline under chunky piano. Closer "Molecules" is the sets longest cut; it emerges from the Alice Coltrane fakebook. Languid flute, sax, and bass clarinet drift along the lithe Latin vamp. Wickham dialogs with the rhythm section before piano and harp surround the intricate modal melody that gels and dissolves with each chorus. The Karman Line - Black is a canny record, one that embraces jazzs historic past as a way of moving forward with music that revels in the present while pointing to more frontiers for Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble to explore in the future. ~ Thom Jurek |
