| Tarriona "Tank" Ball and Norman Spence evade a cul-de-sac with Last Balloon, completing a trilogy that began with Green Balloon and continued with Red Balloon. As Tank notes in an interlude here, "Im done floating away -- Im ready to stay still." No inkling of a creative rut is apparent on this superior final installment, which follows the Grammy-winning spoken word project The Heart, the Mind, the Soul, and involves an auxiliary cast that includes executive producer Austin Brown, an all-purpose collaborator who boarded the bus with key contributions to Red Balloon. Last Balloons prevailing affirmational and self-empowering tenor is subtly and effectively set with a wafting sample of Take 6 quoting Matthew 11:29, the introduction to "Rest," a soothing number graced with sensitive support from Afropop singer Shirazee. He and the other featured artists, most of whom are from Tank and the Bangas native New Orleans, are on the same page. The funk-infused throbbing groove of "Dont Count Yourself Out," co-produced by Michael Brun, sounds tailor-made for Dawn Richard, whose comforting voice meshes with that of Tank. Ledisi and Tank are similarly compatible on the smoothly rocking "Whole World," moving past perceived embarrassment with sanguine self-upliftment. "Move," just as lively and enlivening, showcases Tank in her sweetest upper-register, trading warm verses with Lucky Daye, who no doubt melts his duet partners heart with the deep Stevie Wonder reference in his opening line. Jelly Joseph moves out of the background with a casually nimble verse on the strutting "Jealous," while Ivy Ball (Tanks brother) adds syrupy punctuation to "Nighttime," a rippling house send-off. The tracks without secondary vocals are often as invigorating, equally generous with hooks and nuance. In the main, Tanks writing is more personal and less topical than on the previous albums, though its a clear snapshot of life in 2026. That said, Tanks most impressive performance is the animated tantrum thrown on "No Invite," a partially trap-styled anthem for those who are left out (and equipped with a highly effective bullshit detector). ~ Andy Kellman |
