『Spatial, No Problem.』 (2/2)

Though Mouse on Mars enigmatic, idiosyncratic reputation makes it easy to imagine Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma holed up in their studio all by themselves, projects like Tromatic Reflexxions, their album with Mark E. Smith as Von Sudenfed, prove that theyre actually eager and agile collaborators. In a roundabout way, Tromatic Reflexxions may have laid the groundwork for Spatial, No Problem., the duos brilliant team-up with the late reggae visionary Lee "Scratch" Perry. Recorded in four days in 2019 at Mouse on Mars Paraverse studio and later shaped by the duo into tracks with just enough form to show off their spontaneity, the albums exhilarating creative chemistry melds the cultures of everyone involved. "Rockcurry" dives headlong into the world they made together, setting Perrys weathered, 83-year-old patois to neon shards of synth and an irresistible Motorik beat. Spatial, No Problem. doesnt sound exactly like anything any of these artists created before, and its notably different from Mouse on Mars previous album, 2021s AAI, which put their technological aptitude at the forefront with compositions aided by an AI they constructed. Though this album is another technical feat -- it was recorded in spatial audio, as its title suggests -- its built on human instinct. Perry, St. Werner, and Toma were all determined to make more than just another reggae album, and even when they riff on the genres history with the refracted, sun-drunk rocksteady of "To the Rescue" or the cavernous dub incantations of the centerpiece "Spatialee," theyre more interested in imagining something new than looking back. Mouse on Mars expertise with layered sounds and tactile textures and their gift for building musical structures that are as appealing as they are improbable are the perfect match for Perrys stream-of-consciousness flow; on "Yayaya," he sounds like a wizard or deity with slippery guitars, droning synths, and blobs of bass revolving around him in cosmic bliss. Toma and St. Werners willingness to follow Perry anywhere gives Spatial, No Problem. a satisfying arc as it swings from the cheery bounce of "Hallo Shiva" (where "pick a cherry in the rose garden" becomes a delightfully improbable mantra) to "Economic Train"s surreal meditations and field recordings of Perrys Black Ark studio to more somber moments like "Fire Dali" and "State of Emergency," which closes the album with a litany of "reggae grief" that coalesces into New Orleans funeral jazz. Its a wonderfully apt send-off to a project thats equally inviting to fans of either artist, both, or open-minded newcomers. Of all of Perrys posthumous releases, Spatial, No Problem. is one of the truest, most joyous tributes to his endlessly imaginative spirit. ~ Heather Phares

アルバム『Spatial,No Problem.』 (1/2)
