| マルコスのボサノヴァ期名盤'65が、50年以上ぶりのレコード再発! ブラジル音楽を代表するアーティスト、マルコス・ヴァーリ。ボサノヴァ、サンバジャズ、サンバ、サイケデリック・フォーク、モダン・ソウルなど、時代に応じてそのスタイルを変えつつ、常に一線級のアルバムをリリースし続けてきたミュージシャンだ。 このセカンド・アルバム(1965年)は、ボサノヴァの基礎を築いた作品の一つ。実際、このアルバムには、ブラジル音楽史上最も広く知られ、カバーされている楽曲の一つである「Samba de Verao」が収録されている。兄のパウロ・セルジオと共に作曲家として活躍する傍ら、マルコスはこのアルバムで、柔らかく、どこか儚げな歌声を持つ偉大な歌手としての才能も開花させている。彼のアコースティック・ギターは、彼が多くの楽曲を作曲した夜の雰囲気をそのまま再現し、親密な空間を創り出しているのだ。 アレンジはエウミール・デオダートと共同で行い、他の著名なブラジル人ミュージシャンも参加。マルコスの楽曲は、優雅なストリングス・オーケストレーション、ボサノヴァのリズム、そしてジャズのスウィング感で彩られている。「Preciso Aprender a Ser So」のような洗練された美しさを持つ楽曲、「Seu Encanto」のようなリズミカルな3/4拍子の楽曲、そして力強い「Deus Brasileiro」などが特に印象的だ。 その人気ゆえ、幾度となくリイシューされてきたマルコスのレコードだが、なんとこの『O Compositor E O Cantor』はオリジナル・リリース以来、50年以上ぶりのアナログ盤再発! 180g重量盤でのリリースとなる。 |

| O Compositor e o Cantor, one of Marcos Valle's earliest albums, presents the composer and singer working through a collection of songs (many written with his brother, Paulo Sergio) that would later become Brazilian standards and Valle favorites on his later LPs. But since one of the most important elements of Valle's later artistic successes was his mastery of production and arrangement, these rather spare recordings never quite reach the peaks of his late-'60s and early-'70s material. However, the seeds of his production style are clearly visible on several tracks, including the highlight, "Preciso Aprender a Ser So." He strains a bit with the vocal parts on "Gente" and "Seu Encanto," but for the most part these are incredibly well-conceptualized songs for 1965. Fans of Astrud Gilberto will recognize the early versions of songs she later recorded with added English lyrics, including "Seu Encanto" ("The Face I Love") and "Samba de Verao" ("So Nice"). ~ John Bush |
