| Counting Sunsets continues New York trio SUSSs singular discography of cosmic Americana releases, exploring the wide-open spaces of the desert as well as the stratosphere. The albums numerically titled pieces paint different twilight scenes, all sounding like the sun setting beneath the rolling hills from different locations. "Sunset I" contains sleepy synths, gently drifting steel guitar, acoustic strums, and spaced-out piano notes. Every element takes its time to surface and make its presence felt, and nothing feels rushed or out of place. There are slight wisps of gated arpeggios on "Sunset II," while a few tracks incorporate harmonica along with the crying steel guitar. "Sunset VI" is one of the albums most calmly stirring moments, creating a radiant space and softly propelling forward into the night. The shorter "Sunset VIII" gets by with a delicate piano melody and a few simple, reverberating guitar notes, yet says everything it needs to. "Sunset IX" has a slight percolating simmer to it but otherwise feels like one of the dustiest tracks on the record. The slow, piano-led closer "Sunset X" feels like the beginning of an unusually cold night on the prairie. As usual, SUSS camp out in a certain space and observe the vast terrain, gazing at the sky and across the horizon.
