商品の紹介
This three-disc package from Edsel combines Labi Siffres self-titled debut (1970) and The Singer and the Song (1971) with a disc of additional contemporaneous material. At the time of the sets release, the still-active British singer/songwriter was in the midst of a commercial upswing with film, television, and ad placements, as well as social media, introducing his underexposed and underappreciated early work to a new generation of listeners. (All of this occurring two decades after Siffres songs were sampled for tracks by Jay-Z, Eminem, and Kanye West, among others.) Edsel originally expanded and reissued these two albums separately in 2015, and in 2020 made the discs part of the comprehensive nine-disc box My Song. For the box, two post-1971 B-sides contained on the 2015 reissue of Labi Siffre were moved to the discs of later albums for chronological accuracy. That correctness is maintained on 1970-1971. Labi Siffre and The Singer and the Song pre-date Siffres commercial breakthrough achieved with "It Must Be Love" (which entered the U.K. chart in November 1971, peaked the following January at number 14, and appeared on third LP Crying Laughing Loving Lying). Despite the lack of attention they received, both albums are appealing statements from an openly gay artist who cited vanguard jazz and blues legends, as well as classical composers, as freely as singer/songwriters like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, and Laura Nyro. Covers of Nilssons "Maybe" and Bee Gees "Words" dont overshadow the ten originals Siffre presented on his debut, a strong showcase for his versatility as a refined tenor vocalist and six- and 12-string acoustic guitarist. Lyrically, theres as much range and depth, from "Love Song for Someone," an affectionate and tender ballad, to "I Dont Know Whats Happened to the Kids Today," a sharp social critique told from the seething perspective of a bitter and out-of-touch father. Scathing romp "Too Late," the lone U.K. single, could be mistaken for a Love cover. The debut was produced and arranged by Ian Green, who dressed much of the material with enough strings, woodwinds, brass, and additional ornamentation to make it Baroque pop-adjacent. Green filled the same roles for one-fifth of The Singer and the Song, a charting follow-up otherwise arranged and produced by Siffre to similar effect. The deceptively rollicking "Thank Your Lucky Star" was issued as a single and was perhaps destined to not trouble the chart with pointed lines such as "What do you mean, youre poor?/Well you cant have any more/Its napalm, guns, and bombs we need." Entirely self-written, the album was also highlighted by the happy-go-lucky "Nothing in the World Like Love" and a handful of voice-and-guitar ditties that includes "Bless the Telephone," which was covered by fellow genre-defying Black artists Kelis, Serpentwithfeet, and Annahstasia before it went viral in 2025. Where the hype sticker for the 2015 reissue of The Singer and the Song singled out "Thank Your Lucky Star" and "Rocking Chair," the one affixed to 1970-1971 lists "Bless the Telephone" first as one of several "classics" therein. It took only five decades to get there. ~ Andy Kellman
