| Gigi Masins form of ambient music has often incorporated rippling textures and forward motion, so its not hard to see how his records have become favorites of DJs and sample-flipping producers. Soon after the Talk to the Sea compilation on Music from Memory introduced Masins music to new listeners, he made two albums with Tempelhof that delved into downtempo and Balearic house, and he later recorded some mellow jazz sessions with Greg Foat. For his 2026 solo album Movement, he intentionally created ambient music that connects with the body as well as the mind. While some of the records tracks, like opener "Bed on Mars," sound like drifting clouds or a fog rolling in, others are far more rhythmic, utilizing deep house beats but still keeping things lush and spacious. Just as the album title stands for kinetic energy in motion as well as ambient music developing into a movement in the decades after Masin began making it, "The Age of Sampling" feels like a statement from someone whose work has been sampled numerous times over the years. The track surprisingly features a sort of industrial dub beat not too far off from Seefeel, along with faint chatter and distant horns. "Movement" is pushed along by its lightly shuffling house beat, though its synth-trumpet otherwise feels like its slowly breathing in and out. "Golden" is a more blissful percolation that seems like a logical beat-driven progression from earlier tracks like "Clouds," and "Deception Dance" has a heavier club rhythm and electro pulsations, recalling the best of early-90s ambient house. Masin pays tribute to an influence and former collaborators by covering the eponymous song by British jazz trio Azimuth, from their self-titled 1977 debut on ECM. Layering gentle synth-trumpet wisps over a flickering sequence, the recording feels like a full-circle moment, pointing to a formative inspiration at the beginning of Masins career while fitting perfectly in line with the albums concept of ambient music designed to move the listener. ~ Paul Simpson |
