| Fresh off the success of 2025s Boleros Psicodelicos II, another star-studded collection of romantic ballads, Adrian Quesada formed Trio Asesino and took a slightly different path on their self-titled debut album. With his guitar providing the melodies, Jay Mumfords drums the backbone, and Joshy Souls array of keyboards the texture, the set touches on hip-hop, funk, jazz, and laid-back cumbia, and as it snakes and shimmies through 11 songs it wont change anyones life but it will make it just a bit cooler for a while. The feeling is similar to his 2022 album Jaguar Sound, but where that felt like a producers album, this showcases Quesada the guitarist and prioritizes capturing a live band in a room. To that end, the sound is both punchy and relaxed, the group playing off each other like they had been doing this for decades instead of just a short while. Most of the songs are pretty simple, with Quesada working as the catalyst and the other two providing a soft place for him to land. They work this dynamic to perfection on the late-night ballads "Dont Leave Me" and the rollicking "Venus." Other songs are a bit more ambitious like "MF AF" which brings in harp and trumpets as it elbows into Curtis Mayfield territory, or "Contra El Sol," which ramps up the hip-hop quotient and adds some synths to the mix. The mood takes bit of an emotional downturn on the super moody "Turned It Down," which has the lovelorn feel of a breakup montage in an old Italian movie; "Italy" too has a pensive atmosphere thats driven home by the dramatic piano-played melody that guides the song. These two tracks come at the end of the record and threaten to take the whole thing in a different direction. Not that anyone should mind since they are such strong diversions, but it is just a touch jarring and does break the mood the trio established so well in the rest of the album. A slight hiccup that keeps the record from perfection, but who needs that anyway? Better to love this record for what it is: stunningly good genre-hopping instrumental music that is blended just right and served up with serious style. ~ Tim Sendra |
