| Between their formation in 1996 and disbanding in the early part of 2000, Jejune were part of emos second wave, helping sculpt the hardcore-descendant sound of the genre with songs that reached out, exploded, and withdrew in alignment with the conflicted feelings they often expressed. Wait a Lifetime is a comprehensive portrait of Jejunes studio output, including all of their early tracks from split singles, and the three full-length albums they made in their ever-evolving first phase. Songs from 1997 like the chugging "Drive by Negly" (Jejunes side of a split 7" with New York-area hardcore act Garden Variety) and "Meteorite" from their debut full-length, Junk, highlight the bands punky beginnings, though they moved quickly between fast-tempoed and melodic punk rockers like these and more emo-leaning tracks like "Greyscale" and the jazzy, lounge-tinged emo of "Early Stars." Jejunes second album, 1998s This Afternoons Malady, is where their sound truly came together. Here the band operates in similar territory as contemporaries like Rainer Maria (especially on tracks when bandmates Arabella Harrison and Joe Guevara share lead vocal duties like the slow-burning charge of "Morale Is Low"), Sunny Day Real Estate, or a less math-y Braid, all while integrating ideas less common in their emo peers like the Smiths-y guitar work of the title track or the waltz-time dream pop that melts into noise on "Regrets Are Unanswered Dreams." A third album was recorded right before the band initially broke up in 2000, and that material (originally released as R.I.P. shortly after their breakup) indicated a turn away from emo and more towards indie rock. Songs like "Record City Afterworld" and the synth-heavy "2000 Miles" arent completely removed from emo, but are more adherent to structure than the groups earlier, looser material. Wait a Lifetime paints a picture of just how quickly Jejune was changing, tracking an underchampioned band who outgrew ideas quickly and had the range to simply build on what they liked about the last thing they did. Its fascinating to hear them becoming something new on every album, and its especially striking when bigger changes happen from one song to the next. ~ Fred Thomas |
