| British group Seefeels pioneering combination of electronic textures, deep dubby bass, and space rock ambience set the scene for post-rock on the whole, with their 1990s albums like Quique and Succour sounding patched together from familiar sounds, but not like much else when taken in their totality. Seefeel created a liminal middle ground of their own making somewhere between downtempo techno and shoegaze-adjacent drift, disappearing for years at a time and always returning with new perspectives on their unique sound. Sol.Hz is Seefeels fifth proper studio album, and first since a self-titled outing in 2011. It follows two mini-albums (Everything Squared and Squared Roots, both released in 2024) that moved into slightly more abstract territory but maintained the groups patent approach. The nine tracks that make up Sol.Hz are composed of similar elements as the rest of the bands sprawling discography. The trance-like "Behind the Seen" coats a simple rhythm in a wash of reverb-heavy synth sounds, with loops of woodwinds, otherworldly percussion, and dubbed-out fuzz circling around each other in dizzying polyrhythms. Theres more of a groove on "Until Now," with a slow-moving drum pattern submerged in foreboding tones and splashes of delay, bringing to mind the interplanetary atmospheres of Boards of Canada as Seefeel take their dubwise electronica into the colder reaches of space. Moments like "Brazen Haze" and "Humidity Switch" are more ambient, with either no rhythmic sounds at all or aquatic samples filling in for drums around wordless vocal coos and spirals of droning tones. The sheets of hazy sound and deep-seated thumbs of alien percussion on "AM Flares" create a minimal soundscape, while "Ever No Way" finds a more defined shape with a glitchy beat and twisting synth melodies. Theres even something resembling singing hiding deep in the songs layers. Sol.Hz is classic Seefeel while also going to places that are new for the group. Theres a sense of nostalgia in these tunes, but listening to the album several times reveals that nostalgic feeling isnt because Seefeel are reveling in the past or reworking ideas from their 90s glory days. Theyve been honing something so unique for so long that the new material emphasizes how timeless the older material is, and how its all been part of the same strange and beautiful continuum. ~ Fred Thomas |
