In 2018, violist and composer Mat Maneri enlisted a quartet of longtime collaborators to assist him in creating a trilogy of albums with an overarching tone. He enlisted pianist Lucian Ban with whom hed been collaborating since 2013, drummer Randy Peterson, a colleague since 2000, and bassist John Hebert, a partner since the 1990s. The quartet released Dust in 2019. The first of three recordings for Sunnyside, it offered a moody, atmospheric chamber jazz meditation on grief. The group returned with the ephemeral Ash in 2023, using the loose framework of jazz, improvisation, and chamber music to gauzily highlight themes of loss and grief. Mist concludes the trilogy, offering tentative possibilities for hope in the etheric present and future. Maneris collaborators have long been comfortable walking the murky lines between modernist jazz, classical, improvisation, and traditional folk musics, consciously being attentive to and strategically melding them in a music that exists in a country of its own. On the set opener "Through a Mist Darkly," the violists loose theme embodies elements of blues and post-bop in its engagement with Bans piano that delivers counter themes and punctuations atop the exploratory rhythm section. "A Piece of God" follows and true to its title, uses a circular, five-note theme that echoes liturgical music in order to engage call and response between Maneri and Ban, with minimal embellishments from Petersons snare and Heberts low register. They find an assonant conclusion, but the theme echoes on. "Achlys" is titled after the primordial Greek goddess who appears as mist; she personifies misery and sadness. Eight-and-a-half minutes long, it is introduced by Hebert and Peterson before Maneri and Ban begin conversing over a languid theme with vanguard jazz and structured improvisation. They frame the mythic figures persona in open-ended tonal investigation. The gorgeous title track is at once spectral and thematic, it introduces, via viola, bass, and drums, a dirge-like theme that is appended by Ban who injects intimacy into the whole. On "Paul Motian" (with whom both Maneri and Ban played and befriended), Peterson shifts around the beat, never centering on a groove. Hebert underscores and punctuates lines as the frontline players illuminate empty spaces between cymbal and snare hits. Maneri leans into that melancholy yet simultaneously smoothes the tension. "Loved," the tenderest track here, feels collectively whispered; the viola gently hums as the other instruments surround its vulnerability, offering encouragement. On closer "Missed," Ban and Maneri paint a portrait of loss and acceptance while the rhythm section gently guides them to embrace subtle possibilities for hope and integration. With Mist, Maneris quartet dialogues with trust, intimacy, and creative vision that speaks to the world we live in, its consequences and horrors, while embracing an as yet indefinable silver lining emerging from loss and despair. ~ Thom Jurek
