| Tylas self-titled 2024 debut album was a major worldwide success, introducing the smooth yet bass-heavy sound of amapiano to the general public and establishing the South African singer as a significant force in global pop music. 2026 follow-up A*POP reflects Tylas growth as a person while continuing to fuse different flavors of pop, dance, and R&B. The album noticeably has a tougher, grittier, and at times more challenging sound than her debut, which generally maintained a relaxed vibe perfect for beach parties or lounging by the pool -- "Water" was an all-too-appropriate title for the singers breakout hit. Right from the beginning of A*POP, she inquires "Is it love if you dont cry, cry, cry?" over slightly tense beat patterns and guitars. "That Girl" has angular dancehall beats and a few nearly industrial-sounding noises lurking in the background, while the lyrics delight in splurging on expensive purchases. Tyla has more of a Rihanna-style swagger to her delivery over the hard, skeletal rhythms of tracks like "Is It" and "Mr. Nonchalant." Early highlight "Kiss" is one of the albums most immediately danceable tracks, balancing rave-y synths with skipping drums, as Tyla seems more upfront with her romantic demands than before. "Feel Something" features some of the albums most experimental production, with eerie pianos and pitched-up voices skittering around mutated drill beats, and Tylas passionate vocals make it all click into place. Tyla and Zara Larsson seem like natural duet partners on "She Did It Again," but "Chanel" is a more exciting single, maintaining the popiano feel of Tyla but adding a few harder drum breaks and a bit more force to the vocals. The final stretch of tracks is much closer to the amapiano sound than the albums first two-thirds, and feels like a general return to Tylas South African roots, with cameos from other Afro-pop artists who sing lyrics in Zulu. The lovely "Crazy of Me" contains lush synths, pumping beats, and a guest feature from South African star MaWhoo, while Sowetos Babalwa M appears at the end of the breezy, self-assured "I Dont Care." Without a doubt, A*POP is a much riskier and more personal effort than Tyla, which was the type of accessible, star-making debut engineered to be an across-the-board smash. Give it a few more listens and A*POP reveals itself to be equally worthwhile. ~ Paul Simpson |
