| Drumnbass producer John Cunnane previously earned attention as half of the duo Macc & dgoHn, who released an album on Aphex Twins Rephlex label in 2010. Hes since remained active as a solo artist, releasing little-heard but well-received efforts on labels like Love Love Records, Astrophonica, Analogical Force, and WeMe Records. His style typically pushes the heavy, muscular, live-sounding breakbeats of drumfunk with the glitchy, overdriven effects and odd time signatures that IDM, drillnbass, and breakcore producers obsess over, bridging early Photek with Squarepusher and Venetian Snares. Tessares marks his debut release for Planet Mu, and its a cohesive, intensely focused effort which still contains plenty of abstract details and subtleties. The choppy drums continually surge yet pull back, clearly rushing forward yet making the listener question where its all heading. The producer is an expert at crafting complex polyrhythms, with starry melodies elevating the very distinct rhythm of "Bus to Fairlop," to mesmerizing effect. "Holly Can Swim But Doesnt Really Like It" similarly feels like a sort of aural brain-teaser, yet its knotty rhythm still has a groove to it, and its exciting rather than impenetrably dense. While dgoHn is adept at doing intricate, nimble beatwork ("Orchids," "Electrical Mobility"), hes just as skilled at making all-out Amen killers like "Whistling on a Tuesday."
