| Centered on the idea of a flower growing through the concrete, Ariana Grandes eighth album Petal follows a busy period for the multi-hyphenate artist, who balanced two box-office-conquering Wicked films, another hit album with Eternal Sunshine, and, as referenced here, another relationship that has come and gone. Shes trying to move on, having to process it all in the public eye. So while much of the production on Petal might sound subdued, its anything but passive. Theres a seething angst bubbling underneath the whole project, whether its directed at critics, those former partners, or parasocial fans. Indeed, on many of the songs, its hard to tell whether shes singing to an ex or an opinionated observer. Take the title track (and graphic music video), a biting commentary that serves as a retort to all the noise and scrutiny, gliding languidly through angelic vocalizations as jagged riffs and harsh beats cut through the ominous haze. Or the albums lead single, the ILYA/Max Martin chart-topper "Hate That I Made You Love Me," whose perspective shifts depending on whether the listener believes shes singing to a former lover or the darker corners of her fandom. She works through issues on the skittering standout "Oh Well" and envisions being free from it all on "Freak," where she sings, "Wake me when all this shit is over." Later, Grande drops a nice surprise with "Bad Thing (Bunny Hop)," a pogo-bouncing, new-wave-leaning pop-punk track that injects some energy into the mix (and teases at potential directions she might take her frustrations in the future). Otherwise, the hardened R&B atmospherics -- which echo some of the material on thank u, next and Positions -- mirror the turmoil shes experiencing behind the scenes, while the lyrics paint a sad and, sometimes, tragic picture of life in the spotlight, where Grande is trying to balance her personal and professional goals in the face of constant critique. The blurring of that public/private line makes Petal another unflinching look into the life of the superstar, who, backed by this excellent set of songs, is just trying to bloom and flourish in a hard place. ~ Neil Z.
