| “Ive got a lot of feelings,” Tove Lo sings on Estrus, and it should come as no surprise. While writing her first album in four years, she underwent what she described as a period of feral transformation. Despite her personal changes, Estrus doubles down on everything that defines her music. Lo makes a full return to the dance floor after Dirt Femme, fueling the albums beats with lust, jealousy, and self-doubt. The dark grooves of "Die for My Art with a Lonely Heart" are right in her wheelhouse, along with "Im Your Girl, Right," which finds her fighting, flirting, and hurting over a stabbing house piano. On many of Estrus best moments, expressive production creates the setting, as well as the momentum, for her moods. The buildups and breakdowns of "Are We On a Break" mirror her rising anxiety and sinking despair; on "Idiot," her hollowed-out vocals embody her regrets about the one that got away. If Estrus isnt far removed from the mindset that powered "Habits," it only reinforces the albums feeling that some struggles dont get easier with time. "Im still stuck with me," she confides on the standout "If I Could, I Would," a reminder that her skills at frank, heart-on-sleeve pop rival those of her onetime collaborator, Charli xcx. Her ties to other confessional pop anti-divas that broke big in the early 2010s also remain strong: The night fueled by sweat, alcohol, vomit, and tears Lo chronicles on "DNH" could be happening in the same club as Icona Pops Ritual, and "The Bad One"s mix of unrepentant sexuality and self-awareness suggests she and Robyn would have a lot to talk about. Los own voice remains distinct throughout Estrus, however. Elevated by Stromaes bars, "Des Fleurs" is quintessentially sad and sexy Tove Lo, while lyrics like "Roomie"s "Im going down on Mother Nature" could only come from her. On Estrus, Lo is still an expert at chronicling messy, vulnerable, defiant femininity -- and at making complicated feelings catchy. ~ Heather Phares |

"Roomie" is one of several Estrus songs that barely break the two-minute mark -- a somewhat surprising development, considering that many of her previous releases have boasted lengthy and elaborate tracklists. At times, these songs are too short to do justice to the emotions within them. Tackling the frustrations of a long-term relationship with equal parts indignation and humor, "Im the Cake" ends right when it feels like its getting started (though it lasts long enough for Lo to get in the memorable complaint “How am I not enough for you when Im the fucking cake?"). When she ends the album by questioning her choices on "Source of Life," its more muddled than nuanced. Even if Estrus isnt as decisive as her best work, Lo is still an expert at chronicling messy, vulnerable, defiant femininity -- and at making complicated feelings catchy. ~ Heather Phares |
