| The hard-living country singer/songwriter Gary Stewart rightfully earned his title "King of the Honky Tonks." He began as a songwriter of drinking, honky tonk, and heartbreak songs. During the 1970s he hit as a recording artist with charting singles including "Shes Acting Single (Im Drinking Doubles)," "Drinkin Thing," "Quits," and "Whiskey Trip," and a string of charting albums from 1975s Out of Hand to 1980s Cactus and a Rose. They earned the respect of critics, DJs, and the record-buying public. Stewart sounded like a young George Jones and pounded the piano like Jerry Lee Lewis. After the hits stopped, his lifestyle got the better of him, despite three excellent comeback albums for Hightone in the 90s. In November 2003, his wife of 47 years died of pneumonia. A few weeks later, Stewart shot himself in a blacked-out Florida trailer surrounded by awards, photos, gold records, and drugs. In April 2026, iconic author Jimmy McDonough (author of many biographies including Shakey), who knew Stewart for years, published his biography of the artist: I Am from the Honky Tonks. Three months later, the venerable roots label the Delmore Recording Society released One Track Mind, a collection of early songwriting demos cut between 1967 and 1972. The label hopes to issue two more volumes of unreleased Stewart. Far from dead dogs tracks, this music is vital, kinetic, and bracing. The fantastic two-step title-track opener (one of several tunes co-written with Bill Eldridge) was cut by Del Reeves. Its followed by the honky tonk tearjerker "Kings and Queens," and the moving honky tonk waltz "Woman Will Tear the Heart Right Out of a Man." "Big Bad Train" offers a cross between rockabilly and Cajun folk music with killer guitar picking as the rhythm section clicks and clacks. Six tracks later, the sets single and standout "Iron Bar Motel" delivers a rowdy, humorous account of an ill-fated road trip that would make a trucker smile. "The Bottom of the Pile" and "There’s a Whole Lot About a Woman (A Man Don’t Know)" showcase Stewarts stellar guitar playing. Theres a jaunty country boogie in "You Cant Housebreak a Tomcat," later recorded by Cal Smith. "The Snuff Queen" is a rambling acoustic blues that again showcases Stewarts picking. "Beautiful River," an unfinished acoustic demo, was recorded in a trailer, it offers gorgeous fingerpicked guitar, whistling, and riveting vocals, pregnant with intimacy and atmosphere. The set closes with four bonus tracks; the final three -- all previously issued as singles several years ago -- are fantastic covers of Motown classics. "Baby I Need Your Loving" is pedal-steel drenched country-soul; "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday" is a honky tonk weeper, while the uptempo "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" is a fingerpopping two-step. The sound on One Track Mind varies a bit given the source material, but its easy to listen to. Further, the music is uniformly wonderful in performance and style.
