商品の紹介
| Adrian Younge always has several projects on deck. In 2026 alone he produced and played on three releases from his and Ali Shaheed Muhammads Jazz Is Dead label, with one more coming. Further, his Linear Labs studio and label have issued three 2026 outings: the completely solo outing Younge, the EP Afro-Disco Makossa, and the forthcoming Proud of Me in collaboration with British singer/songwriter ALA.NI. Thats a lot of work for one man, but Younges organic process makes it all possible. Whats more, he makes it look easy. Afro-Disco Makossa was born from a single question: "What would a Ghanaian producer in 76 have made if he set out to create an American disco record for his hometown?" Younge has made thoroughly modern recordings with Afrobeat drummer/innovator Tony Allen and Ghanaian highlife guitar legend Ebo Taylor. This marks the first time Linear Labs offers a record crafted specifically for the dancefloor. These six tracks offer an aesthetic -- and arguably spiritual -- answer. Younge, a crafty multi-instrumentalist, handles electric bass and guitars, electric piano, organ, monophonic synthesizer, and percussion. His ensemble includes two baritone saxophones, alto saxophone, two flutes, trumpet, trombone, drums, and a chorus of backing singers. Opener "Feel the Highlife" references Allen immediately with its shuffling, staccato drum motif that introduces the singers while pulsing circular piano, organ, horns, and flute drive the groove. Over four minutes, disco and Afrobeat entwine; backbeats slip as the foreground charge is wrapped around the flutes, wah-wah guitar, funky bass, and vocals. Syncopated congas and drum kit rumble to the fore in "Shakedown" as guitars, baritone horns, brass, and synth frame a dance pulse underscored by a disco chorus (think Sister Sledge meets Felas Kalakuta Queens). The polyrhythmic thrum is surrounded by blissed-out singing, squelchy synths, and keys. "Number One" offers slippery choral vocals up front as drumkit and congas percolate underneath, while Younges fuzzy wah-wah guitar channels 70s cop-sploitation TV scores. The breakdown shifts modes before syncopated polyrhythms clash and fuse inside the progression. "Every Body" offers a contrast with its jazzy rhythm section creating a frame around Ghanaian percussion and winding, propulsive alto sax. On "Fire in the Disco," the sound of a drum machine, organic percussion, and a roiling bassline add a foundation under the singers. Flutes add ballast while guitar and alto saxophone employ color as the Afrobeat rhythm bubbles up the center. The closing title track is driven by Younges snaky organ leading the guitar and bass, as hard-swinging baritone horns wail in full vamptastic glory around the singers. Flutes, percussion, and Philip Andy Bineys revelatory drumkit work cover the bottom; the other instruments build it all up to an explosive crescendo. Afro-Disco Makossa is a wildly successful experiment. The quality of the musicianship, the innovative meld of rhythms, modes, and melodies, charts, and expansive production open new dimensions in disco and 21st century Afrobeat. ~ Thom Jurek |
